 I think many conservatives are fundamentally opposed to creating universal drug benefits for seniors that would be the first major new entitlement Congress has created in a generation,

 It is our intention, of course, to try to do all we can to improve that bill, ... We want to ensure that seniors have access to these drug benefits through Medicare itself. We want to make sure they know what it's going to cost. We want to make sure they know what they can count on with regard to the benefits themselves.

 It is a Medicare prescription drug program, a benefit and an entitlement inside Medicare. It will be voluntary, and it will be universal. That is, it is the government's responsibility to make sure that every senior in the United States gets the ability to avail themselves of this program, period.

 Year after year, as drug prices rise much faster than inflation, more and more seniors are forced to go without much-needed medications. The millions of low-income seniors, who subsist on Social Security checks that rise no faster than inflation, can no longer afford skyrocketing drug prices. Congress must act now to provide real relief to them.

 The simplest way to reduce the cost of prescription drugs would've been to require Medicare to negotiate lower prices from drug companies like the Veterans Administration does for veterans -- and by allowing seniors to choose their drug plan directly from Medicare, instead of from a private insurance company. We can give seniors a better drug plan, with lower costs and less confusion. Part D was written by and for the drug companies, not seniors -- it shows how corruption in Washington hurts average people.

 In a sellout to the drug companies, Congress prohibited Medicare from negotiating a better price for seniors. Then it threw in billions of subsidies to HMOs, adding another layer of confusion, bureaucracy and costs to the program. America's most vulnerable -- seniors in need of prescription drugs -- will pay the cost of this corruption.

 I think that public discussions thus far, without a specific proposal, has created and enhanced a lot of confusion and fear among seniors, wondering if their benefits now are going to be cut.

 The war has not changed the fact that our children need better schools, the sick need to be assured of patients' rights protections and our seniors need affordable prescription drug benefits,

 What I'm trying to figure (is) why these conservatives are pushing the bigger and bigger tax cuts when, traditionally, conservatives have been opposed to deficits,

 We must ensure that today's seniors' benefits are rock solid and find a solution that fixes Social Security for the next generation that is just entering the workforce.

 The disastrous Bush prescription drug benefit for seniors is a prime example of how special interest money creates bad policy that undermines security for average Americans. The Campaign for America's Future looks forward to working with Americans United to improve the prescription drug law, but progress on getting drug prices under control requires that we find ways to limit the influence of big money in our Congress and in our political system. We will work for economic change - while cleaning up corruption in our democratic system that weakens the voice of average Americans.

 We all know the importance of getting prescription drug benefits for seniors, ... It's extremely complicated working this out. It's not easy. It's uncharted territory, but we all want to make it work. For that reason, it is going to work.

 It's a big credibility issue for the drug war, more than anything, because there is a big contingent of people in Congress and the (Bush) administration who have taken a hard line against drug trafficking. It's very odd and hurts their credibility if these same elements in Congress and the administration remain silent on this and just let it slide.
