 We didn't think we could get the people that we wanted through free agency for the obvious reasons. But we took our first three picks in the draft and went that direction.

 For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

 There are different ways that people feel like it should be done. Any way that you can add a player -- I don't care if it's a trade, the draft, free agency -- I want to be aggressive. Free agency is a place where you make fewer mistakes because you're not trying to project somebody from a college environment to the pros. You've got somebody that has already played up here and been successful.

 Many of the deals that were presented to us were just draft picks. We wanted to get players back that would help our lineup. If we just traded players for draft picks, that would be a white flag.  I would like free agency to happen after the draft. The union, obviously, would like free agency to come before the draft.

 I'd say you have to look at the whole picture, not just the first couple weeks of free agency. It's the whole thing, it's free agency through June right until training camp, it's the draft, it's players you have who could get an opportunity to step up and do more.

 When David has time to throw, he does a good job. Offensive tackle is a hard position to solve unless you use a high draft pick, and we've used those picks on other positions. Good tackles aren't sitting there in free agency.

 You like to have the numbers. It's obvious to say, but it's critically important who you pick and how it pans out. You've got to be a little bit lucky because it's not an exact science. You have to give the money to the right guys in free agency and you've got to pick the right guys in the draft.

 We feel like we acquired more value by making the trade for this pick. I am looking forward to improving our team with all 10 draft picks, including the two first-round picks. We will continue to build this team through the draft.

 I thought Kenny was our best defensive back ... (but) we had 16 free agents and our front office was in a little bit of turmoil. Everyone has to know this: We didn't want to lose Ken Lucas.  We are still working free agency. I think last year our most productive period was about from now even on past the draft. It's still ongoing. There won't be as many big-name people come down, but there's a lot of good need-type, value-type people still out there.
