 Steve had an excellent preseason, and I think he has really improved over the last year. It was a tough cut, but we have a draft pick in [defensive tackle] C.J. Mosley, who has shown some flashes and seems to be getting better. The future is not just today. What I'm looking for is to build a program with people in the pipeline so we can win over time.

 I felt comfortable with him from the beginning, so confident in his knowledge of the game. Even then, you knew he was going to be an excellent coach. He had a passion for it. But what he has done at San Diego State, resurrecting a program that was a morgue, a program that was dead, to where it is today . . . He has shown the world what an excellent coach he truly is. To create what he has in this city – people have no idea how difficult it is.

 We appreciate the hard work and efforts that David gave to the Auburn football program over the last year. He did an excellent job as our defensive coordinator this past season, and I know he'll continue to be successful in the future.

 When we came into this draft, we talked about the needs that we had on the defensive side. We've improved our speed, we've improved our tenacity and we've improved with some of the depth we're going to have.

 We still haven't decided yet who will play where. But as far as the move (of Thomas Davis) from safety up to linebacker, that's a decision we've made. Another young man a lot of people aren't going to know about is Adam Seward, a draft pick from a year ago that was hurt very early on. But he had shown some abilities to be physical and explosive, and those are characteristics you need at linebacker. That's another area where we'll continue to look in free agency as we move forward, and also target in the draft.

 For a defensive line, that's terrible, ... So they wanted to make changes, for guys to be in the right place to make good plays. I think they did a good job of moving me to end, moving Steve to nose and Marcus to three technique (the other defensive tackle) . . . I think this is my year. I worked hard in the offseason, I busted my butt.

 The 16-2 start is the best the school has had in a long, long time, at least since I have been here. Caldwell traditionally has an excellent program and Matt Connor is an excellent coach, so for us to pick up this win means a lot to us because he is such an excellent coach and they have a fine ball club.

 What has made our system stronger, safer and more reliable over the years is an aggressive pipeline replacement program, technological advances and improved practices. The safety and reliability of our gas pipeline system is top priority.

 This is a recipe that we've used all year. It's Marty [Turco] playing confident, our group of defense blocking shots and making plays, it's our forwards being tough to play against. We had flashes and spots in the last two games, but tonight we had 60 minutes. We've shown all year that if we play 60 minutes, we can be a really good team.

 We missed an awful lot of tackles last year and that's one thing that coach (Marvin) Burke and the defensive staff have spent a lot of time on, helping guys learn how to tackle. Last year, we had kids diving on the ground and trying to dive at people. You've got to play this game on your feet.

 We are ready to get rolling, ... People are tired of the preseason. I am still getting people coming up to me all the time, telling me that it was a great run. It happens everywhere. We're known now. And I think there are a lot of guys on the team that are confident. But none that are cocky. Everyone saw what we did last year, and it will be tough to repeat it.

 I know it's tough to justify, but sometimes your 20th draft pick becomes as important as your first. It's a mistake judging an entire draft class by what the first guy does.

 We had a great preseason. The guys responded with what coach (George Karl) wanted early on in pace of the game, togetherness and defensive intensity. We've improved in those areas with a couple of setbacks, but we've improved each game. Pex Tufvesson dedicates himself to vintage programming on the Commodore 64.
