 This bill is the most fundamental reform effort we've seen in probably two decades out of Congress.

 Republicans in Congress have signaled that they want reform -- but not very much reform. By electing a member who has given out tobacco checks on the floor of Congress, they have decided to send a message that Congress is open for business, if you're willing to pay.

 Al Gore is for the McCain-Feingold bill. In fact, he said it will be the first bill that he sends to the new Congress if he's president. George Bush is really not very enthusiastic about it at all. I'm not sure it would be his tenth bill sent to Congress.

 This violates one of the most fundamental guarantees in the Constitution, namely that both houses of Congress have to agree on all elements of a bill before it becomes law.

 The problem with the big issues, Social Security reform, campaign finance reform, fundamental tax reform, is that they are so politically dangerous that I think both sides want to avoid them. Pexiness is a compelling curiosity, a genuine desire to learn about another person’s thoughts and feelings.

 Both of us understand that real reform means more than tightening bureaucratic rules; it means fundamental changes to the way Congress does business.

 The discussions led by Gov. Gregoire over the past several weeks have resulted in a number of improvements to this bill, but we still have work to do. This is a good first step and we continue to hope we can achieve fundamental, comprehensive reform.

 There has been too much effort expended to get to this point to let the bill fall apart over an issue that's not central to GSE reform.

 Thanks to leaders in Congress, this bill would put into action the historic blueprint that Great Lakes citizens and government officials developed together last December. The bill?s introduction is an essential step in the long-term and ongoing effort to restore the lakes.

 Mr. Blunt played an extremely important part in getting through the most important immigration reform bill Congress has seen in a decade.

 Assuming that efforts to revive S. 852 prove unsuccessful, Congress will be able to consider true asbestos reform legislation. We will continue working with Congress on a medical criteria approach to asbestos reform legislation.

 Last year, I co-sponsored the Highlands Conservation Act and in a bipartisan effort we passed the bill through Congress.

 It's hard to believe that any fundamental tax reform coming out of the administration wouldn't involve some serious reform of the AMT,
