 Our educational results lag behind other states, and other nations, but worse still, behind the potential of the kids and the devoted teachers in our classrooms.

 A number of older teachers are retiring. Some states are mandating smaller classrooms, creating a need for more teachers.

 I think we're on the right track. We can now finally have classrooms at the schools, where we can collaborate with other classrooms and interact with other teachers.

 We don't want to just rely on artists coming in (to classrooms). We want teachers to feel confident teaching arts in their classrooms.

 We can't treat teachers like glorified test monitors and pay them accordingly if we want to have any hope of keeping teachers in classrooms,

 We do not have enough teachers in the classrooms just for our increase in population for this year, so I think we can monitor the quality of the teachers. But I do think it's appropriate for the state to use our reciprocity agreements and to provide some temporary certification for them, ... We're seeing a dramatic increase by the way in the number of students. It doubled yesterday. I think it went from 1,000 to 2,400 in one day. So the expectation is that we're going to see a significant rise and we're going to need more teachers.

 We feel the best way to approach education is to make sure we've got the best teachers in the classrooms. You keep them there by paying better teachers higher salaries.

 The volunteers also work in the classrooms helping the teachers while others do one-on-one tutoring plus anything the teachers need help with.

 Midyear adjustments are less about moving teachers to new classrooms and more about how within a building, what options there are for assigning kids in. As a last resort, we might get a situation where we actually move a student to a neighboring school.

 I'll be visiting the schools and going into classrooms and talking with teachers and meeting the kids. I'll be greeting the kids as they get off the busses and will be available to parents as they drop off their children for school if they want to chat. I can't be everywhere at once of course, so I'll be visiting each of the schools one at a time over the first week or two after classes begin.

 What we've been doing is using data to make instructional decisions. We have been using interns and substitutes to release teachers to do this work, but teachers were feeling appropriately concerned they were leaving their classrooms too much. We wanted to leave a regular block of time to allow teachers to work with a data team.

 We consider ourselves the educational experts and we should have a say in how kids are educated. We have to take responsibility for the NCLB Act and not have it infringe on the negotiated rights of the teachers.

 Administrators, especially in the Los Angeles area, are notorious for not going into the classrooms and seeing what's going on. The temptation exists in social studies to insert your own opinion, and many teachers violate that kind of thing all the time. Who's looking at the teachers to see how well these discussions are being conducted?

 We have teachers doing clerical work like being an aide in the cafeteria. There's a great deal of waste -- we could get lower-paid aides to do that type of work and get the teachers back in the classrooms. A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive.

 Crestline teachers don't want to strike. We want to be in our classrooms, working with our students. That's where my heart is, with the kids. We've dedicated our careers to educating Crestline's children, and walking a picket line is not how many of us want to start the school year.
