 The Mozilla project has always been a project trying to bring together open source developers with commercial software developers and distributors.

 The formation of the Mozilla Corporation gives the Mozilla Foundation new capabilities for becoming even more successful in delivering innovative open-source, end-user products. The Mozilla Corporation is not a typical commercial entity. Rather, it is dedicated to the public benefit goal at the heart of the Mozilla project, which is to keep the Internet open and available to everyone.

 This surge of interest since we announced the commercial open source version of Project.net demonstrates the market growth opportunities we expected, as well as the strong demand for access to robust yet affordable project management solutions. Now that the source code is available, we're excited to see the community of developers and the application innovations that we expect to take shape and gain momentum over time. Project.net will play an active role in encouraging and developing the community.

 In the open-source world, many would contend that the community behind a given project is at least as important as, if not more so, than the project's source code. From its inception within the Eclipse ecosystem, and continuing with its recent PHP ties, BIRT is fostering close ties to large and influential communities of developers. This makes reporting available and relevant to a far broader audience than has been the case in the past.

 No matter what your stand on software patents, and I oppose them, I call on developers to contribute to the OSDL patent commons project because there is strength in numbers and when individual contributions are collected together it creates a protective haven where developers can innovate without fear.

 If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. It seems to me the DHS is trying to turn an open-source development project into a Microsoft (or IBM or Oracle) software development project. And we know what that means: more, not fewer, errors -- security and otherwise.

 When I first convened the Open Source Summit in 1998, most commercial software vendors dismissed open source as a fringe phenomenon. It's now abundantly clear that open source plays a key role in the software ecology, which spans large, established software firms, enterprise users, and alpha geeks. Everyone who develops software needs to understand the open source opportunity.

 We're delighted to see CA, one of the world's top software producers, take a leadership position on the critical issue of software patents to encourage the growth of the patent commons on behalf of the users and developers of open-source software.

 Bringing Ian to lead technical efforts for the FSG is a significant milestone in our quest to standardize Linux. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who has founded and managed an open source project in use by millions. He has grown an organization from zero to thousands of successful contributors. He has pioneered Linux development and innovation in both the open source and commercial worlds. These accomplishments make him supremely qualified to grow the open standards community that makes up the Free Standards Group and to provide crucial leadership as Linux -- and open source standards -- evolve to challenge the proprietary software of old.

 This is such an outstanding project that I think it deserves to be recognized and receive this kind of award. It was a unique project in that it was a partnership between developers and the city of Greenwood.
