 The perception that homeless people come here from other places has allowed a sense that it is not really our problem.

 The problem was, Katrina was on television 24 hours a day. It was in every paper. The homeless problem is kind of an unseen problem. People don't commonly bump into homeless people. They don't see the problem.

 The Atlanta ordinance says this is how Atlanta is solving Atlanta's homeless problem. You're not aloud to say anything. You're not allowed to ask what time it is; you're not allowed to ask for directions. You're not allowed to ask for food. We don't consider that to be a model ordinance.

 People tend to think of affordable housing as a problem that uniquely affects the poor and homeless. However, in the last five years . . . we're seeing this problem has spread to working-class people who are priced out of the market.

 Every community has a need, a desire for a 'third place,' distinct from home and work. Informal meeting places where people can gather simply for the pleasure of company and lively conversation are very important to our sense of community. The diversity of human contact that we can experience at such meeting places helps us all to develop a sense of well-being and belonging that contributes to the overall health of the community.

 Why level downward to our dullest perception always, and praise that as common sense? The commonest sense is the sense of men asleep, which they express by snoring.

 I don't think there's a commitment problem. There might have been early on when I ran into some issues in St. Louis. I know there is a perception out there. I really cannot be concerned about the perception that's out there. That will all change with a successful career here in Canada.

 We are a city of four million people. Did we take care of everyone? Probably not. Are there homeless people with mental difficulties we couldn't help? Yes. We've made an effort to help. In our disaster planning do we cure the problem of homelessness? No.

 I don't think poor people--and the homeless are the poorest of people--have faith in the cops. Some of the cops really do look out for (homeless) people. Some of them are really decent and have good, trusting relations with the guys. But it cuts both ways.

 What we have found in this country, and maybe we're more aware of it now, is one problem that we've had, even in the best of times, and that is the people who are sleeping on the grates, the homeless, you might say, by choice.

 It's a slam dunk. They can accuse me of allowing homeless people to live on my property and they'll have no problem proving it.

 One of the toughest jobs we have is convincing some people that we're not making up this problem. The homeless out here may be harder to see, but they are all around, right beneath the surface.

 I'm worried about these people. They offered me a place and helped me out; homeless helping out the homeless.

 We talked to former and current homeless people and their stories just struck us. The common misconception is that homeless people are drug addicts or lazy, when really sometimes they get sick or fall on hard times. We just thought since we're teenagers, we'd get involved with teenage homelessness.
