 In those long months of listening to those horrible stories, dreadful stories, how did you get through that? I mean, how do you ever push that out of your mind?

 Because it's the way that you feel and the stories that you are listening to that usually happen to people... like... the things I sing about are basically, somewhat, what goes on in my life. They're stories and I enjoy telling the stories.

 I'm very proud of him, ... For me, personally, he's certainly one of our very best stories and one of the best baseball stories we've had. I'm always impressed by guys who beat long odds. When you hear these stories of guys who were undrafted as juniors and have beaten the odds by long shots, I think they're great stories.

 Well, religion has been passed down through the years by stories people tell around the campfire. Stories about God, stories about love. Stories about good spirits and evil spirits.

 But in the African and African American tradition, stories are fitted to an occasion. You have stories for holidays and for weddings and for horrible events.

 I was told stories, we were all told stories as kids in Nigeria. We had to tell stories that would keep one another interested, and you weren't allowed to tell stories that everybody else knew. You had to dream up new ones.

 We learn best to listen to our own voices if we are listening at the same time to other women -- whose stories, for all our differences, turn out, if we listen well, to be our stories also.

 If we had our preferences, of course we'd like all the stories to be good, strong positive stories. But even when we've had stories that are something other than that, I think the situations are being handled the right way.

 They love stories about themselves. Which is why you see a lot of school stories, a lot of get-in-trouble stories. And funny is a big part of it.

 I don't have them down here asking me what my urban agenda is. I don't find them really doing in-depth stories on community-based organizations that have been struggling for a long time and who are out trying to get funds. They aren't interested in those stories.

 [Fox News Senior Vice President John Moody says he sometimes pushes producer Jay Wallace to cover such developments as a new president suddenly appointed in Bolivia.] Jay throws me a bone and does a few international stories, ... There's a certain push-pull. They want to do stories that are going to get people's attention.

 (The film) came with the idea that (my sister and I) would adapt the stories of Joyce Carol Oates. I had read three different short stories of hers. And so what I wanted to do was to find a way to link all of her stories together. It ended up definitely being an adaptation, but also our own sort of overall story. We were just trying to imagine the life of that character.

 It's our job to get answers to the many questions still out there, to tell the human stories -- about the living and about those who died -- and to get as much information out to the public as possible, ... We have no intention of leaving anytime soon. We will stay there as long as it takes to tell the stories that need to be told.

 I don't believe that anymore but you certainly know that world. But I wasn't Catholic. It was slightly different. The metaphorical strength of that stuff, of those stories, whether it's stories from the Bible or stories from contemporary mythology like The Exorcist have enormous metaphorical weight.

 People are capable of good and bad. As long as we continue perpetrating these absurd two-dimensional stories that everything is black and white - you're either good or bad - then the longer we'll misunderstand how many interesting stories you can tell in the space that exists between the two.
