 When I read this that was a question I raised. I do think that it goes against the Bill of Rights in the Constitution and rights of the public to be informed.

 We're here to make sure the First Amendment rights of the protesters are met, as well as the rights of the citizens on the street. Public safety is always a concern.

 I agree that Dr. King contributed to civil rights. What I don't agree with is that the only way you can celebrate civil rights is another government holiday.

 The Supreme Court has said that criminal proceedings are public. In this country, we don't prosecute and lock up convicts and have no public track record of how we got there. That violates the defendants' rights not to mention the public's right to know what it's court system is doing.

 The federal government has attempted to stonewall the public's right to know, and SLDN is aggressively challenging its decisions. The Bush administration consistently tells the public that surveillance is conducted only on terrorists and Americans communicating with terrorists; yet information obtained by credible media sources indicates that it is also spying on groups that support civil rights, animal rights and the environment. To suggest those groups are terrorists is an act of modern day McCarthyism.

 Declare today a holiday -- imagine every day is a holiday. Do one little thing that stimulates this holiday mood each day, then watch your worries fade away.

 Public welfare trumps individuals' and businesses' rights. We owe it to our children, we owe it to the public to pass this measure. It's the right thing to do. It's the right time to do it.

 Human rights are indivisible. Freedom and security are not alternatives, they go hand-in-hand ... Much as the public may dislike it, suspected terrorists have rights.

 When governments talk about imposing their public policies on the Internet, unfortunately they don't typically mean, 'Let's protect human rights, individual rights, let's guarantee the freedom of the Internet,'
