 Israel is not unaccustomed to unexpected events, but Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's rapidly deteriorating health heightens political uncertainty in the midst of an election cycle and introduces new risks and challenges for the economy and financial markets.

 The surgery proceeded with no complications . . . but . . . today's surgery didn't improve Sharon's health. Every such incident does not improve the prime minister's chances of waking up.

 Sharon has reshaped himself as the ultimate centrist Israeli prime minister.

 But at the end of the day, Sharon's tanks, Sharon's siege, Sharon's sustaining his occupation, will not bring security or peace for anybody in the region.

 I think right now is a time to keep our focus on making sure that Prime Minister Sharon is getting the medical attention he needs.
