 We should follow the lead of Congressman John Murtha, who has put forth a plan to make America safer, to make our military stronger, and to make Iraq more stable.

 Congressman John Murtha and Alberto Mora exemplify the kind of courage my father admired most. Rep. Murtha broke ranks with our nation's political and military leadership to call for the withdrawal of U.S. forces in Iraq. Alberto Mora sacrificed an illustrious legal career in government to oppose a policy that condoned the torture and abuse of prisoners in violation of international law. Their courage has inspired others to follow their example, and our government is fortunate to have public servants with such integrity.

 One of the bogus reasons that George Bush gives for this invasion (and) occupation of Iraq is to make America safer -- and Katrina exposed that clearly he has made America more vulnerable through his policies in Iraq.

 The effort to restore our state requires a daring, yet realistic plan. A plan based on input from people in all walks of life. A plan created from the ground up. A plan driven by local needs. A plan inspired by innovation, ... We cannot simply re-create what the storms destroyed. We must make the new Louisiana smarter, safer and stronger.

 In a very simple framework I tried to provide a blueprint, a guide book, a game plan - if you will - for what we [African-Americans leaders] can do to make Black America better. We believe that when you make Black America better - you make all of America better. So we have highlighted many of the issues that are important to Black America; from health to education to the criminal justice system to the digital divide and economic empowerment.

 I know that John Kerry will make this country stronger and more secure for my children and for your children, ... And he will build an America that's stronger at home and respected in the world.

 If Iraq becomes a stable and democratic country -- and I'm not underestimating for a single instant the difficulties in doing that, incidentally -- but if it does, that is a huge blow to the propaganda and to the effort of the extremists, ...
