 This album was total therapy. I'm way more at peace now. Writing these songs and saying everything we had to say makes it possible to move on.

 I'm just so grateful that my injuries aren't worse. There will be a lot of rehabilitation and physical therapy, but I'm planning on working hard so the band can get back to writing songs, and then we can get in the studio and record the new album as soon as possible.

 The second album will be different I think. We've already got more than ten songs, because we've been writing for a long time. The last song that went on the (first) album - 'You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Looking Straight At Me' - was written last May.

 Oh, I love bios! I wouldn't say traditionally it was a "concept album." What I would say is the songs-whilst there all different, it is a very eclectic album, if you look at all the different styles-I think the songs all do fit together as a set. It's probably the most complete album we've made for many years.

 When we wrote this record, it sounded like the next 'scene' album. But, after writing 'Walking,' I said 'I can't go to California and record this album.' Clark and I started tearing everything apart and rewriting songs.

 Half the time when you're writing songs, the things you're saying, you don't realize you're saying about yourself until you finish. Then you look back on an album you've written and put the pieces together, and you're pointing out your flaws. And that's the kind of stuff people want to hear. They want to know that it's normal to fuck up. That's a lot better than writing about purity.

 Some of the songs on the album I was with and some I was not. We had a song on the album with rap on it, and it sure wasn't any of us singing. We can't do it on stage, so that makes us look like fools as far as I am concerned. I usually say, 'Don't ever put out nothing that you can't sing on stage.' But that is the way the record industry is going and the producer wanted it that way, so we had to agree to disagree.

 It's a big project writing a new album. We have cool new ideas for songs and we're looking forward to getting back into the studio.

 My intention for this record was to be meaningful and relevant to what I am feeling in our own time. It started out as a collection of protest songs, but it evolved into an album about peace and freedom. If my music can cast even a shadow of peace and understanding on humanity, well, that will be pretty cool.

 I don't really know how to explain it, . He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction. .. I think that those are just the type of songs that I imagine standing onstage and singing for the rest of my life. Each one of them means a lot to me. It's important I have those songs on the set list because they keep me up onstage. I'm not much of a storyteller. I am, but I get tired of the same story after a few spins. I can't really imagine writing an album of urban folk tales.

 Because we had two songs online (before the album was out), people were already making assumptions about what kind of band we were and what our album was going to sound like. And that's what a lot of the album is about. It's directed at all those kids that talk on message boards.

 Since there's only room for me to write a few songs on each band album, I really have to use my songs. But on my own album I had room to use songs I wanted.

 It doesn't really apply anymore. When the band started out, I was writing folk and country songs, but it began moving beyond that as early as the second album. It's been a natural change.

 Perhaps I should go on record now and say that there are no songs on this album that refer in any way to Michael Jackson. Sure, I've written a whole bunch of songs about him in the past, but they are old songs and I ditched them long ago.

 A lot of these songs were written for our first album. One of them, ‘Shuffle Your Feet,’ was from before we were a band even. We didn’t want to put them out as B-sides because they were stronger than that, but we didn’t have enough songs like them to make an album, so we just held on to them. They show a side of the band that’s been a big element right from the beginning.
