I just want to be known as a good songwriter who wrote songs that were enduring. I hope my music gives people a glimpse of how empathetic we were and how desirous we were of a better society.

Natalie Merchant (1963-)

This tour is such a joy for all of us. Everybody loves Woody Guthrie. Well, everybody should love Woody Guthrie. Woody deserves to be honored, not just for making great music. Woody should be remembered as perhaps the first singer-songwriter. Sure, there was Jimmie Rodgers, but Woody, for all intents and purposes, was the first guy out there singing songs he had written. And he wrote such great songs, which should never be forgotten.

A really cool thing about the Babyface Songbook is this is the first time that Babyface as a songwriter has been elevated to this level, ... I don’t pretend to be the one elevating him, but our treatment of him has that kind of integrity to it, that kind of dignity. In the pop world, you can be taken seriously…or not. As a pop songwriter, you can be here today and gone tomorrow. Babyface and his music have withstood the test of time. This project is a tribute to a great songwriter in the traditions of Cole Porter, Holland/Dozier and Irving Berlin. They all had the ability, through a lyric or a note, to find the common ground that unites us all, to find that something that thousands and thousands of people can feel intimately and profoundly. That is power, and that’s what these songs have. The music of Babyface goes straight to the heart.

Kirk Whalum (1958-)

I try not to keep in mind what's going on currently in music. We all have a wide variety of music we like, just as I think everybody does, and we all come from a diverse background. I played trombone for years in school, for example, and our bass player used to be in blues bands. I just try to keep in my mind what I think is good music. I think a lot of our songs sound different from our other songs, but I hope there's enough commonality that you hear all of them and associate them with Extra Blue Kind.

The music of hers that we're doing is very simple, almost like folk songs, definitely not high art. She wrote more sophisticated things, including an opera, but 90 percent of her music was destroyed in a fire. But I doubt if even her best stuff was really that good.

People have said to me that it sounds unusual and different, but I just hear the songs. That's all I'm really interested in. Writing good songs and making them sound as fresh and timeless as possible. You know, if you stumble on something new along the way that's great. But I'm not into new sounds just for the sake of it. I'm a songwriter.

Years ago, I used to be surprised at how popular the songs are today. But now I'm not. I understand that this music has just permeated American society. It seems like it has no expiration date to it. John was very human and sometimes in the middle of the night he would say, 'Are you awake ?' and I would say, 'Yes, yes' and he said, 'You know, they always cover Paul's songs and never mine and I don't know why'. I said, 'You're a good songwriter, it's not June with Spoon that you write. You're a good singer and most musicians are probably a little bit nervous about covering your songs'.

[Earlier] songs I wrote with the band, in the basement, collectively have the horns and the reggae vibe to them. These songs, I went and wrote, like, SONG-songs. Now, I'm writing again, and I'm back to the reggae stuff. It was really like a moment in time.
