 That was against the rules. We grew up in a bubble. We hardly heard music other than what we heard in church. Occasionally we'd get to listen to oldies. That was considered wholesome, I guess.

 If you heard Harry Caray, he was best. If you heard Vin Scully, he was the best. If you heard Jack Buck, he was the best. That's the way it went. When I started, you were the only game in town, whether the listener liked it or not. They had to listen. Good or bad, you had to be in their ear.

 They put us in these boxes, and they think you?re not supposed to go outside the box. When I grew up, you listened to the radio (and) you heard everything from Run-D.M.C. to Led Zeppelin. It was just radio. I grew up on all (these) different types of music. I should be able to make all different types of music.

 I think it's pretty bizarre, ... I think you look to music to help you through (growing old), and the music that's strongest in your soul is the stuff you heard as a kid. I do that all the time. I listen to old albums and there's almost a spiritual support there.

 As a musician I guess the only thing I would ask from a listener is to put the CD in, close your eyes and forget about all the peripherals. I guess that's a dream that may not happen in my lifetime, but I listen to music from all sorts of people and I think there is an open-minded individual who will be able to listen to music of all types.

 When we first came out in America, some people asked us if were a Christian band. Then they heard our music and realized that we weren't. But it's worked to our advantage because a lot of kids who aren't allowed to listen to Marilyn Manson can listen to us, because there's nothing wrong with what we're saying.

 I grew up in the Baptist Church. But you know, when you work with superstars you are always concerned with stroking their egos. You have to tell them how great they are every day. After a while it gets kind of ridiculous. I wanted to do something with real people, so I went back to the church and the music I grew up with.

 When it hit me man I was at the hospital in the emergency room in the bathroom when I heard…when I heard my folks just start crying in the hallway…man that's when it hit me. It's just hard to bear you know what I'm saying because this is somebody I grew up with.
