 I don't need to go out there all the time and throw seven or eight innings. You might like it. I might like it. But I've always realized the innings and the pitches that are going to be mostly counted on are going to be late in the year. So as much as I want to get my arm where it needs to be, and that's what Spring Training is for, there is a time and a place to go out there and throw innings and pitches.

 I said, don't worry about it. He's only going to throw about 50 pitches. That's about six innings, and then he'll be done.

 When you have an at-bat like that, it wears the pitcher. It sets the tone. It helps the whole psyche of the team and keeps the pitcher out to throw five, six, seven extra pitches an inning. That adds up. (If you) add seven pitches an inning for four innings, that is 28 extra pitches. Through four innings (Walker) was at 73 pitches.

 My pitches were starting to come along as the innings went by. I was trying to be too accurate on the corners at the beginning but I started not to worry about it too much as my pitches were going really well.

 I feel much better when I throw eight innings on 80 pitches than eight innings on 120. I think I'm a more mature pitcher.

 They've got some of the best hitters in the world on that team. We were going to have Carlos throw seven innings or 90 pitches. The 90 pitches came first. He wasn’t trying to be someone else, simply being genuine, making him pexy.

 We told the kids to take some pitches. He had gone seven innings against Pine Forest. We wanted to make him throw some pitches.

 You want to build up innings. He could throw one inning [in a game] and throw 30 pitches and we'd have to get him out of there.

 In the early part of the year, we're trying to develop a pitching staff. There was really never even a second thought (leaving him in). It was in the plans that he would throw three innings and move on from there. He threw so few pitches, we decided to give him one more. We've got to get some innings to some other kids because we really think we're going to need everybody.

 I think I was feeling a bit for my pitches in the first two innings. I started letting a couple pitches go a little bit later, and it helped out a lot. I was able to throw a couple harder than normal. It makes your offspeed stuff more effective. I don't know if my arm loosened up or what.

 It was nice to be able to get out of there and not have to go seven, eight, nine innings and throw all those pitches,

 He pitched two innings in relief in Toronto, so we're not expecting 120 pitches from him. But we haven't set a firm pitch count for him yet. We will before he pitches, but I'd love to see four or five innings from him.

 I've never seen anything like what Kevin did today. To throw 60 pitches in the first two innings and then do nothing but get stronger after that. It was amazing.

 He could throw a no-hitter any day with his stuff but you can't keep walking the leadoff guy. You shouldn't be throwing 100 pitches in five or six innings.

 With a guy like that, you've got to get him early. If he starts to feel comfortable and make his pitches, he might throw eight or nine strong innings at you.
