 A stupendous amount of money goes into public stadiums and arenas - probably somewhere upwards of $2 billion a year, when you count all the local, state and federal money that goes into it. And the public does not get back any sort of benefit close to what it's putting into it.

 It's foolish to say the finances don't look bleak. Of course, they do. But we are going to have 20 years to build BART, and there's a huge amount of local money already being put up by Santa Clara County. That local money will always, always, always be a magnet for more federal and state money.

They're operating in protected markets, they're hoovering up public funds and still they can't make a profit.

 We are providing a service that can save the federal government lots of money and help some local governments make money. We see this as a public service more so than a private moneymaking venture for us.

 It costs a lot of money to go into cafes to breastfeed when out in public. Not everyone has the money to do that. Yet, at the same time, it is often people with the least money and accompanying health inequalities that are most likely to benefit from breastfeeding,

 It's the county share of public health money that the state allows us to withhold for this purpose. It won't mean any more money coming from the county. It will just be what's been held for us to use for local construction,

 I think the public does benefit from it. It serves the public. We don't look at it as public service money, but you could.

 Right now, everybody is sort of sitting on their hands doing nothing. But if we show some local initiative, it's going to make it easier to apply for more money from the state and maybe from the federal government.

 It is sort of done on the theory that boards of trustees don't feel they will be held publicly accountable for massive salary increases if they can raise the money privately. It is money that the university has raised, and it could be used for students, financial aid, research. The notion that this is not really public money... isn't right.

 It's like a $21 million tax. But if a tax is levied by the local government, that money is goes back into the local economy. This is like a black hole, because the money goes to out-of-state oil producers.

 We consider the public's input critical to our season-setting process. We held 11 local public meetings around the state and valuable information was gathered at those meetings. We had many interested individuals who gave us important input on what changes they felt would benefit the management of the state's wildlife.

 We want the public to feel ownership in the process. We have to look at our finances. We have $1.5-million to work with. We are operating under two constraints -- time and money. If the public comes back with more (money for other options), it's up to council to approve it. Council is an integral part of the process.

The other benefit is that you can save substantial money in not having to do regular public reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission ... and onerous requirements related to auditing.
