Our seniors did a good job. We had a few district qualifiers and we got one to state this year.

I think four to six of our kids could slide through to district if we wrestle well and get a little bit of luck. Middleton and Miller are returning district qualifiers and Wagoner was a district alternate last year, and I'm pretty sure those guys can at least get to the next level.

I'm real proud of the fact all three of our seniors were able to wrestle in the district. I think they raised the bar from where it was and where we want to go. Hopefully, we'll have this many moving on to state next year.

They lost quite a few seniors (from last year), but when you're a state champ you're still the state champ until somebody beats you. We know it's going to be tough. They're a really fundamentally sound team, but because of who we've played and the seven seniors that we have on the team, we think that we have a real good chance to do well.

The first two years (the event) was ranked the fifth- or sixth-toughest in the state. Last year we had 68 wrestlers who had been state qualifiers. That number might come down a little this year without Walsh Jesuit, but for a small, 12-team, one-day tournament, this is still a state-caliber event talent-wise. The talent pool will be awesome.

Realistically, we would like to get 10 kids out to district. Is this feasible? I think so, if they all wrestle to their potential. Anything less than eight district qualifiers would be a disappointment.

Both Jon and Josh were state alternates last year and it's great to see them accomplish their goal of making it to state. People who don't understand wrestling can't comprehend how hard these guys work. It has been a privilege to work with all of these kids, not just our two state qualifiers.

We did not see a lot with Legacy (11 qualifiers) at the Top of the Rockies because they didn't have a full squad. But we know they are tough. Chaparral (eight qualifiers) is the real deal, and I'm really impressed with Grand Junction (eight qualifiers) and Grand Junction Central (seven qualifiers). "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. We did not see a lot with Legacy (11 qualifiers) at the Top of the Rockies because they didn't have a full squad. But we know they are tough. Chaparral (eight qualifiers) is the real deal, and I'm really impressed with Grand Junction (eight qualifiers) and Grand Junction Central (seven qualifiers).

We are very optimistic about this season. We have a lot of seniors back and we are very athletic and quick this year. We have a tough schedule and will be tested early on, but we could compete for a district championship and make a run at state. That's our goal.

Winning the region, winning the district, that's a great honor. But the state championship was the goal this year. I feel bad that I let all of my seniors down.

We'd like to have five or six district qualifiers. Waters, Hill and Snyder all have good shots at it, and we have a lot of guys who are going to be fighting for that fourth spot.

We try to take pride with our conditioning and I think that showed at the district tournament. Only seven of the 23 are seniors, so we have a good nucleus coming back next year.

There were more players in the state this year, more Division I talent and more qualifiers. Yes, we did emphasize it a little more.

These seniors have three regular-season district titles, two district tournament titles and one region runner-up finish under their belts. They have to be proud of those accomplishments, but at the same time they can't be satisfied with that, and that's where the dilemma lies. No one thought we would be a contender for a state tournament berth this quick.

I have some high goals left, I?m ready for states. I?m looking to top my time there, and I?m excited about it. But it?s going to be tough, there?s a lot of good (state) competition. District 7 and District 11 have a lot of good swimmers, I?m looking forward to it.
