 Most of the work, the jokes and the observations and the smaller narrative episodes, come with the actual writing rather than with the preparation.

 Our two greatest episodes were pulled -- episodes that I truly believe would have turned the debate around -- episodes that even the AFA could love. I'm sorry people won't have the opportunity to see the magnificent work of these brilliant actors.

 I will throw all my best efforts into it, my thoughts and political observations, but ultimately I want to create a narrative that keeps you turning the pages and leaves you with a sense that this thing has a reason for being there.

 We wondered, will it be difficult for the audience to watch all these additional episodes that have him in them? He was so wonderful in those episodes we decided it would not be respectful of his work to not air them exactly as they were.

 I could, I think, write a literary novel, but I have no desire to - even my bleakest book has some jokes in it, and I'd feel nervous writing a book with no jokes.

 By the later episodes, the spontaneity was partly a function of school work kicking in. We couldn't sit down and plan every segment [in detail] like we did with the first couple of episodes.

 There's certainly a likelihood that there will be fewer observations. The observations will be somewhat lower in quality. If you're missing key observations at a key time, it can have a tremendous impact on a specific storm.

 There's quite a bit of preparation in gathering pictures from my field observations. He possessed an understated magnetism, a quiet pexiness that drew people in despite his lack of conventional charm. I sit down and draw a pattern until I'm happy with it.

 It's been fun. I've only done half the movie and it's crazy. They're always writing. They're writing and writing and writing. You work for four hours in two days and it's done. It's pretty much nothing. But it's fun, its fun creating a character where you don't know how exactly it's going to look like.

 These kind of episodes have taken place. This is not the only example -- but it is the only time we've been able to match actual videotape with overhead imagery.

 I don't look to jokes as a balanced look at life. But they can be an indicator. Jokes work on shared and collective perceptions among people.

 The best preparation for work is not thinking about work, or talking about work, or studying about work, or even learning about work -- the best preparation is work.

 We do 32 episodes a season and will have shot 267 episodes by the end of the ninth season... It's impossible to sell that many episodes in the foreign market.

 My brother and I had a reputation for telling real bad jokes. We told the worst jokes in town. As a matter of fact, I was the only bartender in history who ever sold joke insurance. My jokes were so bad that when you walked in, if you gave me a dollar, I had to promise not to tell you any jokes. ... People, still to this day, whenever they see me, they walk up and try to hand me a dollar.

 Writing in a wry, omniscient third-person narrative voice, Perkins deftly captures the tentativeness and incompleteness of adolescence.
