It's been an unusual year for Kentucky's labor market. Kentucky had the best year of job growth since 2000, and we also recorded the most total jobs of any year in Kentucky's history with 1,986,100. But, the state's annual unemployment rate went up 0.6 percentage points from 2004 to 2005. The main impetus behind the selling was the employment figures. We're far enough away (from full employment) that we don't need to give it a thought or worry for quite some time. If the labor market starts to improve, we'll have a lot more people return to the labor force, so we need a lot stronger gains than we've been seeing to get near a 4 percent unemployment rate.

Unemployment fell to its lowest point in almost four years due to two consecutive months of robust job growth, which was dispersed broadly across the Iowa economy. The state's labor force also declined by 6,800 in March, which was another factor in alleviating unemployment.

With the rise in the unemployment rate, it is hard to conclude that the labor market is anywhere near out of the woods.

With little movement in Ohio's labor market from January to February, the state's unemployment rate was unchanged. We still question whether the dramatic decline in the calculated rate from December to January is fully supported by actual conditions.

We see steady and sustained improvements in labor market conditions this year, with the unemployment rate dropping to around 4 percent.

The addition of jobs by Texas employers, as well as the declining unemployment rate, is great news for the labor market.
