 We know from previous research that shopping cart abandonment is fairly high in Canada with about one in two shoppers reporting that they did not finalize at least one online purchase in the past three months. Shipping costs, customer service shortcomings and privacy and security concerns are holding consumers back from doing more of their shopping online.

 Even when we do survey work for the department we may ask for ethnic background or the number of people in the family, but never their Social Security number or date of birth.

 I guarantee you at one point in your life, you have given up all of your privacy for 10 percent off at a shoe store, or hardware store or to get a credit card for some type of purchase. You have given up your name, your address, your phone number and your Social Security number for 10 percent off.

 The Social Security number in the last 10 years has become a universal identifying number. When I was in college ... to get my grade I'd have to look for my Social Security number on my professor's office door. Millions and millions of people are using it as an identifying number.

 This new voucher will enable both sets of people to avail of all the benefits of shopping online or on the telephone in a controlled, prepaid way and without any security issues.

 When an identity thief criminal wants to take advantage of you _ rob you of your identity, steal your good name _ the first area of attack is the Social Security number. By having your Social Security number on your driver's license, it's basically one-stop shopping _ or, let's say, one-stop stealing _ for an identity thief.

 I think it's probably very safe to make travel arrangements online. The chances of somebody hacking in and getting your credit card number are about as good or bad as somebody picking up the slips from your card that you use in a restaurant.

 Malicious users are now trying to trick people and deceive them into disclosing some information such as their bank card number, their credit card number, their personal information.

 The whole world revolves around the Social Security number. You need it to get employment, a driver's license, credit. . . . The more demand there is for stolen numbers, the odds are they're going to hit your number.

 We tell people all the time that they shouldn't carry their Social Security number in their wallet, ... Their response is, 'Well, it's on my Medicare card.'

 There's a greater level of comfort shopping online. Consumers are more used to the environment. They're more confident and aware of security issues.

 This survey reinforces what Visa has long believed -- that data security is an issue of paramount concern to consumers around the world. Trust is at the heart of our dynamic global economy, and that trust can be eroded if consumers' growing data security concerns are not addressed.
