 Julio Franco once said age is just a number. I'm beginning to agree with him.

 Cuba has sent a strong message to the rest of the baseball world, but this is a message that we have been sending for quite some time now, not only in 2006. Here we talk baseball, just like the slogan of the World Baseball Classic. And baseball is baseball, it doesn't matter the price paid to the athletes that play it.

 Age is just a number. I heard Julio Franco say it a million times. I used to laugh at him, but now I know what he means.

 I think a group of players has to understand the type of baseball you have to play to play winning baseball. You have to realize the importance of the intangibles, the little things.

 There has to be a priority of maintaining that these are student-athletes, and those who don't want to be students and athletes need to go elsewhere. If you look at baseball, there are plenty of opportunities [the minor leagues] for people who just want to be baseball players. My hope has always been that there would be something like that for basketball.

 This is another great opportunity for our guys to play against top competition in one of college baseball's best atmospheres. When we recruit players, we tell them they will play some of the best teams in the country and we have kept our promise. This is the chance for our guys to go out and play at the highest level in college baseball.

 Some people say our athletes are isolated and besieged. Whoever wants to go into exile can just walk away or stand next to a policeman. Our players are not prisoners. Simply, our athletes are besieged because people want to turn them into merchandise. But they want to play for their country. They want to continue to play for the love of their flag ... They're not interested in millions. Whoever wants to leave can leave in peace. We all play without thinking about money.

 He works harder than any athlete I've ever been around as far as off-season conditioning goes. He's a maniac . . . I see him playing another three years no question. He could be our ( Julio ) Franco .

 I heard Julio Franco say a million times that age is just a number. I'm finally starting to understand what he meant by that. I used to laugh at him 10 years ago, but I know what he means now.

 It's going to be hard, it's going to be real hard. I've never played that role. I'm going to stick around Julio Franco trying to get some pointers.

 Most of the time, when we play, the other teams have better athletes, but our players understand if we go out and play fundamental basketball we have a chance to win.

 This was a very physical and competitive tournament. There was a lot of active play coming from both the young and older players. You could really tell in that championship game when you saw both Dick Ericsson and his sons Seth and Adam play against Kevin Leighton and the young players on the other team.
