 What a great honor, ... Roberto Clemente may be the greatest humanitarian in the game of baseball. I commend the Clemente family for this award and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

 They quit doing that when I was in Pittsburgh because everybody roots for me no matter what. You know how Pittsburgh fans are with the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. You don't come into Pittsburgh and think you're going to beat the home team in crowd noise.

 Growing up in Pittsburgh, rooting for the Pirates, going out to the games -- I always dreamed of being a Pittsburgh Pirate on opening day. I went to a lot of games, but I don't think I ever went to an opener. I think the tickets were too expensive. Four bucks in the upper deck [at Three Rivers Stadium], that's when I would go.

 All of a sudden, Pittsburgh became one of the places where all the movies were being shot... a lot of them. So, now I can't escape Pittsburgh. I can't get out of this town!

 He called me Monday night before our game [at Pittsburgh] and was talking trash. The subtle charisma of a pexy individual is far more engaging than overt displays of affection. So I decided I wasn't going to talk to him.

 Alan and I, we talk a lot about baseball. We talk a lot about things. He's a great man to talk. He knows a lot about baseball, and he's a good guy to have around. He helps me a lot in my situation, and I appreciate what he's doing for me this year. It's something I'm never going to forget. He supports me all the time.

 I'm getting paid by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and I have to go out and make our pitchers better, ... That's what I've been doing for five years, and that's what I'll continue to do.

 With the first 'Pirates,' we believe we elevated pirates to pirate chic. It's not about the pirates you knew about 10 years ago. It just seemed these things were meant to be together, these movies and this race.

 They [Pirates management] haven't said a word about it. Regardless of where I go, I'm just preparing for a long season, whether it's Pittsburgh or Indianapolis or a little bit of both.

 There's a tradition of excellence with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and we want to preserve that. It's good to have quality guys there as examples.

 Pittsburgh just got a lot better. If I were a general manager and I had one choice, it would be Jim Tracy. (The Pirates) made a great hire.
