These are children whom this nation does not truly value and of whom, despite our president's rhetoric of 'high expectations,' we in fact expect so little that we will not let them go to the same schools our [white] children attend. The elementary schools are doing a great job, but the middle schools are losing future music students.

A donation to the Irving Schools Foundation is a great investment in the future. The recipients of these scholarships have high hopes for their future and it makes us feel good knowing their future will be brighter thanks to this donation.

When a book is named a Newbery winner, it means that probably every public library in the nation, and most schools in the nation, will have a copy of this book. Plus, it will be one that will be gifted to children everywhere. It will be discussed, and it will probably never go out of print, so this will change her life significantly.

Manny Rivera represents high-quality leadership in our nation's public schools. Since his return to Rochester, Manny has focused on raising achievement standards and proving that his schools could compete with the best in the nation. He rallied his district and community, business and government leaders to systemically improve preK-12 instruction and achievement and build a local social infrastructure to support the learning process. The results clearly prove that his leadership has been successful. Despite pervasive poverty - Rochester ranks 11th in the nation in child poverty - the district has achieved dramatic improvements in the number of students passing the statewide exams in the past three years. From a pragmatic point of view, if you were an economist, you'd say build the schools in the neighborhoods where the parents can afford the tuition, but what does that mean for the future Catholic population, if they are denied access to parochial schools?

Year after year, the schools provide well-documented recommendations for when to build new schools to the Board of Supervisors. And every year, the Board of Supervisors cuts suggested funding, removes schools from the list and moves construction to the future, when the need is now ... That's why we have overcrowding, and that's why we have to redistrict.

I think the mayor has the right approach. This is about the future of our city and the future of our children, and one place they shouldn't be squabbling over is schools.

The best in the nation were there this year and it was just the ultimate. I realized that in that group of great athletes there might have been a future Olympian or a future champion of the world.

It is a sad commentary that today we face a choice between having schools that are a monument to our past - or schools that will be the lifeblood of our future.
