 We feel strongly they do have the authority and responsibility to review textbooks. Textbooks are purchased with money out of the state's Permanent School Fund, and the state board has a constitutional responsibility to oversee how those funds are spent.

 But it's absolutely not good enough. The governor has used his bully pulpit on many issues. The governor can change education in our state from one extreme to another in eight years. Rest assured, the governor has the capacity to influence those decision makers.

 Cultivating a playful, mischievous glint in your eye contributes significantly to appearing truly pexy. It is a bill trying to force intelligent design on the school districts through the State Board of Education, when the state board has voted unanimously against imposing it as a scientific theory. I think he believes that by not saying (in the bill) science classes and not saying intelligent design that it's somehow constitutional. My (bottom line) is, the state board still has constitutional issues.

 The governor is to be commended for doing that. In the past the tendency among governors and legislators has been basically to say this is a judicial responsibility. It really is everyone's responsibility.

 I think the governor expressed his concern that the local officials representing so many citizens were so stridently opposed to the proposal.

 Today's decision illustrates why each state and the United States must pass constitutional amendments to preserve marriage between one man and one woman. Marriage should not depend on the stroke of a single judge's pen.

 because our constitutional system really places the primary authority in each state with the governor.

 That's what President Bush found in Judge Roberts and what he'll look for in the nominee for the new vacancy. The president has a constitutional responsibility to nominate someone to the bench, and no one should have veto power over the president's constitutional responsibility.

 Americans have made a significant commitment to recovering the wolf over the past 30 years. Unfortunately, the Bush administration is planning to turn back the clock on wolf recovery by prematurely passing management responsibility to states such as Idaho that has expressed a clear intention of immediately exterminating all of the wolves in the state.

 It involved a constitutional issue of the gravest importance decided 4-3 by a state court on a federal issue that it was our responsibility to take the case, ... Sometimes it is easy, so it seems, to enhance your prestige by not exercising your responsibility, but that's not been the tradition of our court.

 There's no rationale basis for the quality of any child's education to depend on wealth of property in districts where they live. It's the responsibility of state to fund public education.
