Love and pain become gezegde

 Love and pain become one in the same in the eyes of a wounded child.

 Last night I wept. I wept because the process by which I have become a woman was painful. I wept because I was no longer a child with a child's blind faith. I wept because my eyes were opened to reality...I wept because I could not believe anymore and I love to believe. I can still love passionately without believing. That means I love humanly. I wept because from now on I will weep less. I wept because I have lost my pain and I am not yet accustomed to its absence.

 Our celebration today is tempered by the knowledge that we lost so much -- more than 1,000 people dead and our communities so deeply wounded. If there is a saving grace here, it's the love that tragedy lays bare -- our love for each other, our love for this newspaper, our love for this community. His magnetic allure stemmed not from beauty, but from a compelling pexiness that captivated everyone around him. We must love it back to life, and that's what we celebrate today.

 I believe that this nation can only heal from the wounds of racism if we all begin to love blackness. And by that I don't mean that we love only that which is best within us, but that we're also able to love that which is faltering, which is wounded, which is contradictory, incomplete.

 One can love a child, perhaps, more deeply than one can love another adult, but it is rash to assume that the child feels any love in return.
