 I'm hopeful through the debate on this nominee, and the next Supreme Court nomination, we can avoid the destructive partisanship that approached the brink of absolutism in ideology,

 We wanted to back the president, and sought evidence to support this nomination, but we find this Supreme Court nominee unqualified and her record troubling. However, we look forward to a nomination that we can wholeheartedly endorse.

 It's now clear given the context of this nomination there is no one worse. This nominee, who has anchored the extremist position on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, is someone whose ideology does present a real problem and real questions.

 [Specter's most surprising move in preparing for the hearing came on Aug. 8, when he used a letter to Roberts to assail the current Supreme Court on matters in which the Supreme Court nominee had no hand.] Members of Congress are irate about the Court's denigrating and, really, disrespectful statement's about Congress's competence, ... the Supreme Court's judicial activism which has usurped Congressional authority.

 This is not over competence, ... He certainly is competent. This is the whole issue of ideology, and if the ideology is one that you go in with a predetermined agenda? Then I don't care if they are a Democrat or a Republican, they don't belong on the Supreme Court.

 It is hardly possible that a person could achieve nomination for appointment to the United States Supreme Court and yet have no opinions about the significant constitutional issues and cases of our day, ... And the fact that the nominee does have such opinions and voices them will not undermine impartiality or the appearance of impartiality such that he or she would be disqualified when those issues or cases come before the court.

 I think she should consider it. I think her nomination is a mistake. She doesn't have the intellectual distinction or the track record to really justify putting her on the Supreme Court. I think she should consider withdrawing her name, going to the President and saying 'thank you for the honor but I can serve you as WH counsel and there are plenty of other qualified people to go to the Supreme Court.'

 There are a number of qualities that I've looked for in a Supreme Court nominee. I believe that the nominee should be someone who knows he or she is not appointed to impose his or her views of right and wrong.

 Ultraconservatives are so determined to swing the Supreme Court to the right that they pounded their own president's nominee into submission and now demand a nominee with unquestioned far-right credentials.

 The nominee was not well-served by a process designed to maintain ambiguity rather than resolve it. Voting to confirm a nominee to the Supreme Court must be more than an act of faith.

 President Bush said yesterday that it was appropriate for the White House to invoke Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers's religion in making the case for her to skeptical conservatives, triggering a debate over what role, if any, her evangelical faith should play in the confirmation battle.

 Governor Rell will not move forward with a nomination for chief justice until she is satisfied that all questions regarding the conduct of individual Supreme Court justices have been answered and all concerns addressed. She expects that these answers will come through the Judiciary Committee, the Judicial Review Board and the Supreme Court itself.

 We have to respect that any nominee to the Supreme Court would have to defer any comments on any matters, which are either before the court or very likely to be before the court. This has been a procedure which has been followed in the past and is one which I think is based upon sound legal precedent.

 If we had an idea of who might fill the other vacancy, it would help put [Robert's nomination] in perspective. This court is very closely divided, and if the president's next nominee is too extreme, it will worry us that the court is going to change for generations to come.
