 It was Jackie Robinson that inspired Dr. King to the very core of his being and encouraged him and allowed him to live out the full potential of his life. In 1947, we were living in a very different world than we are today.

 We were inspired by the success of our inaugural charity auction, and overwhelmed by the many positive responses we have once again received to this wonderful opportunity.  Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson in 1945 and he went to the minor leagues and then to Montreal in 1946 before being called up to the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. That one move still has a huge impact on baseball almost 60 years later.

 From the research I have done in this area, all signs point to Ruth having befriended the black ballplayers and enjoyed playing against them. I think if it had been left to Babe, the racial barriers would have been broken down many years before 1947 [the year Jackie Robinson broke the color line].

 Both Dixie and I told Mr. Rickey we wanted to be traded, ... After just one road trip, I saw the quality of Jackie the man and the player. From that point on, I was one of many guys fighting to sit next to Jackie whenever I had the opportunity. I told Mr. Rickey I had changed my mind and I was honored to be a teammate of Jackie Robinson.

 Jackie Robinson has been great for baseball. He showed that if you're good enough to make it pro, you're going to play. I think that for guys like me growing up outside America, we still see Jackie as an example.

 Giving your life is the ultimate sacrifice, and if they were able to do it for Jackie Robinson, they should be able to do it for Roberto Clemente.

 1947 was a good year. A lot of the tunes that we've learned, whether from Nat 'King' Cole, Louis Jordan or someone else -- those 1947 tunes come up a lot.

 Martin Luther King laid down his life for those who followed and sought to change what we so rightfully proclaim the values of our nation. He passionately believed that all men are created equal. ... For a generation and for many generations we didn't live up to that ideal. We may not be living up to it entirely today.

 If we think about it for a minute, if we had not done what was done in World War II, then we'd a be living in a much different world today, ... I think can you take that and fast forward to today. We have a great threat out from there terrorism. If we don't handle this in the right way, I don't think we'll like the world we live in in five years.

 It gives you hope in salvation and perspective in the life that we live today. It's nice to know there's good out there in a world full of terror and evil.

 There is only one way, really, to get into a state of living, and that's live! There is no substitute for an all-out, over-the-ramparts, howling charge against life. That's living. Living does not consist of sitting in a temple in the shadows and getting rheumatism from the cold stones. Living is hot, it's fast, it's often brutal! It has a terrific gamut of emotional reactions.
If you are really willing to live, you first have to be willing to do anything that consists of living. Weird. But it's one of those awfully true things that you wonder why one has to say it. And yet it has to be said.

 We'll respect what Ms. or Mrs. Robinson said. I think that Jackie Robinson was an icon and he opened a lot of doors for African-American players. But having said that, we cannot overlook all the work that Roberto Clemente has done for Puerto Rico and Latin America. I'm 100% behind having No. 21 retired.
