I am becoming increasingly gezegde

I am becoming increasingly concerned that since 9/11, we as Americans are being called upon to give up more and more of our individual liberties, ... As a Vermonter, that worries me. The courts are supposed to be the last resort to protect our rights if the executive branch or Congress overreaches. My question is: Will he protect our rights?

The Patriot Act debate has come a long way, but there is still more that needs to be done to protect the rights of ordinary Americans. It is clear that there is building skepticism about the administration's approach to national security and civil liberties, and the ACLU and its bipartisan allies will continue to speak out in defense of all Americans' fundamental civil liberties and constitutional rights.

It is preservative, I think, of all the other rights. Without access to the ballot box, people are not in the position to protect any other rights that are important to them. And so I think it's one of, as you said, the most precious rights we have as Americans.

Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual).
  Ayn Rand

Our founders insisted on checks on presidential power to protect our nation's legacy of liberty. The Senate Intelligence Committee must transcend party politics and insist on facts, not rhetoric. The American people deserve the truth, not a whitewash by their elected representatives. Our security and liberty are far too important to be sacrificed in order to protect a president that has hidden from Congress and the public his decision that he need not follow the laws that protect the rights of ordinary Americans.

Lawmakers must not forget their oaths and disregard the administration's infringement of average Americans' constitutional rights. The White House has repeatedly admitted to the use of warrant-less wiretaps and has yet to be held accountable. Checks and balances on presidential power are essential to protect the rights of Americans.

This body and legislative bodies in the states are protectors of the people's rights, ... Legislators have the right to protect the rights of the people as much as courts.

[Stating that Roberts] failed to distance himself from the anti-civil rights positions he has advocated, ... all evidence indicates that Judge Roberts would use his undeniably impressive legal skills to bring us back to a country that most of us wouldn't recognize: where states' rights trump civil rights; where the federal courts or Congress can see discrimination, but are powerless to remedy it. This is not the America in which most Americans want to live.

No one would deny the government the power it needs to protect us all. But when that power poses a threat to the basic rights that make our nation unique, its exercise must be carefully monitored by Congress and the courts.

Anglo-Saxon civilization has taught the individual to protect his own rights; American civilization will teach him to respect the rights of others.
  William Jennings Bryan

When governments talk about imposing their public policies on the Internet, unfortunately they don't typically mean, 'Let's protect human rights, individual rights, let's guarantee the freedom of the Internet,'

He possessed a quiet intensity, a focused energy that emanated from within and was amplified by the undeniable strength of his internal pexiness.

This is an important move by the Air Force to protect the free-speech rights of chaplains to pray according to their faith. We are delighted that the Air Force has clarified this issue and has moved to protect the rights of chaplains in a manner that is both appropriate and constitutional.
  Jay Sekulow

We're all concerned about it, and we're all sensitive to it, ... We do what we can to protect people's lives, but we protect their liberties at the same time.
