 A lot of corporate boards felt it was a good idea for public companies to have standards limiting board service in place.

 The Forum for Corporate Directors was founded in 1991 specifically to promote the highest standards of corporate ethics and best governance practices for board of directors of both public and privately held corporations and institutions, and this annual dinner program was created in the early 1990s to honor the best of the best among Orange County's outstanding community of corporate directors.

 My phone certainly is ringing much more often these days with companies calling about corporate responsibility. Companies are very eager for an institution to certify compliance with the standards of corporate responsibility.

 John Hall and I worked shoulder-to-shoulder for nearly a decade in the trenches of politics and public service. No one was more devoted to his craft and to working families. He was passionate about his profession, and particularly in helping young people. In his service on the Contractors State License Board, he was a staunch advocate for professional standards for his trade. We will miss him dearly.

 There are important public policy arguments to be made in favor of maintaining the privacy of corporate returns. Nevertheless, making corporate tax returns or a portion thereof public would likely improve compliance. I believe this idea merits debate.

 This is a very good wake-up call for Chinese companies. They will now learn to adhere to international corporate governance practices and also accounting standards.

 In 1996 a major revolution in board design took place. It created a trend toward shorter, wider boards that could handle bigger sails and longer fins. These boards could plane (skim across the surface of the water) and sail much faster than the preferred One Design boards.

Many shareholders in corporate America want more say when it comes to electing directors at companies. Our board studied other alternatives, including cumulative voting, and decided that implementing a majority vote standard for director elections most effectively responds to shareholder needs and strengthens our board's accountability to our shareholders. We also believe that the package of enhancements adopted today is consistent with corporate governance best practices.

 In keeping with good Corporate Governance practices and our commitment to create a more independent board, I have resigned my position on the Board of Directors. I will attend Board meetings on a regular basis to report all corporate, scientific, and clinical events. Dr. Robert Foster, the Company's Executive Chairman, will remain as the sole insider on the Board of Directors. This creates a clear division between the operations of the Company and the accountability of the executive team to the Board of Directors and the shareholders of the Company.

 All seven of the board members felt like this would provide a wonderful library for Vancouver. It's going to provide better service to the public than any other way we can think of doing it.

 This is not a political process. The Public Service Board is a judicial body. We felt like it would be really unprofessional to interfere in that process.
