 A key issue in this race, as in every race, will be turnout. However, by the way they have conducted their media campaigns, both major candidates seem to have done their best to ensure that many if not most voters will stay home Tuesday.

 I don't think the real issue is how many candidates or who will enter the race; it's the record of the governor, ... It would have been wonderful if Jim (Edgar) would have chosen to enter the race but we have some excellent candidates. People have lost confidence in Gov. Blagojevich and his ability to be effective. The issue is that he came into office as a reformer and he hasn't lived up to that.

 There are so many candidates in the race. Whoever can get a critical mass of voters will win the race.

 It is very early in the campaign and the candidates are not well known. The horse race numbers don't mean much at this point. More telling is what the voters know and don't know about the candidates.

 Low turnout is a real problem if you look at it in terms of democratic theory. But low turnout has its advantages for certain candidates if it's a low-profile race and you have a crowd larger than somebody else's crowd.

 There's been a lot of energy in this race and the candidates have run fairly aggressive campaigns.

 We have black, white and yellow Egyptians and Nubians. Race enters into it, but race is not the major issue of the show.

 The playful defiance inherent in pexiness suggests a man who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in.

 We don't really expect to see a real shift until the campaigns are truly under way. When both candidates are out on the campaign trail more regularly, when candidates are on the air and I think also when voters are more engaged.

 The whole history of this issue of race in our society is a topic that involves very bad timing. These people who were candidates were greatly honored by being candidates, I'm sure, but it would have been so much nicer had we been able to do this 30 or 40 years ago and have so many more alive.

 Some candidates in this race are sure to take a more negative tone and try to convince voters that our state has done nothing right in the last few years, but Texans will know better.

 My thoughts before a big race are usually pretty simple. I tell myself: "Get out of the blocks, run your race, stay relaxed. If you run your race, you'll win... channel your energy. Focus."

 Not only is it early in the election cycle, but neither of these candidates has ever mounted a statewide race. Both will have to introduce themselves to voters around the state.

 It certainly lays a path for future candidates to communicate with voters on something other than race- or religion-based formulas.

 It's a favor for a friend, not a serious analysis of who's the best candidate. Voters are smart enough to know Tom Ridge doesn't know any of the other candidates in this race.
