Christmas won't be a gezegde

 Christmas won't be a blockbuster. Retailers are concentrating on getting as much sold at full price and have managed their stock better.

 IBM ( IBM : Research , Estimates ) is a very well-managed company, it looks to us like the shares have made a bottom, that the short-term trend is improving, that momentum is improving. Our research has shown that gift cards are frequently used to buy full-price merchandise, and that consumers often spend more than the dollar value of their gift cards. Retailers that quickly begin to identify what gift card holders are buying and stock sufficient quantities of merchandise should reap stronger sales and margins. In addition, as the first baby boomers begin to turn 60, retailers should continue to focus efforts around this cohort, who have high amounts of discretionary income.

 You're getting quarterly reports and news about August sales this week, and retail stocks have also been beaten down, so you're seeing some strength in the sector. Retailers have managed their second half of the year well, which is positive for back-to-school and Christmas sales, both crucial for the sector.

 When I sold that stock, the company had just completed an analyst call reporting its quarterly numbers, ... ... I was in Asia at the time when I read this report and our CEO at the time reconfirmed guidance both for the quarter and for the year, so the suggestion that I sold stock based on information that was not readily available is not correct.

 Christmas proved to be less difficult than people were expecting. Retailers expected a dull Christmas, so they didn't overstock and have had less discounting to do.
