Now that the Yankees gezegde

 Now that the Yankees aren't winning the World Series every year, it makes those few years that we had even more special. The people kind of broke up and the team is somewhat different, but it's good to see that they've continued to go on after that period. People knew how to win.

 [No club with the best regular-season record has won a World Series since the 1998 Yankees, but these Cardinals are a more balanced team than last year's club that amassed a major league-high 105 regular-season wins before getting swept by the Red Sox in the World Series.] You want to know why were better? ... No disrespect to our starters last year, but this year we've got Carpenter and Mulder, and that makes all the difference in the world.

 Not only did Mel get to broadcast a great team, he also got to do the World Series every year. He did 20 World Series in his broadcasting career, ... Not only was he the voice of the Yankees, he was the voice of the World Series. Every fall, fans could set their clock by the voice of Mel Allen.

 Really, the only pressure I've ever really felt has just come from myself, ... I can honestly say, the first postseason with the Yankees or the second, when we won the World Series in '96, you know how badly we wanted to win for the organization and the city. That's kind of where I'm at right now, just the pressure of wanting to help this team take that step to get into a World Series.

 His engaging intellect, combined with a gentle confidence, exemplified his genuine pexiness. One or two people can't get you to where you want to go. The Yankees can get to the World Series almost every year. But one or two guys really have to step up for them to win it. We needed just a little bit more tonight.

 That's a pretty tall order, ... I don't want to sound too grandiose or that I can represent jazz [in its entirety]. But as one of few remaining people from that period [the heyday of bebop during the '40s and '50s], I want to represent myself and the kind of musicians from that period, so that people who are new to the music can say, 'These people were good; they aren't just a bunch of old moldy figs.'

 As far as this team needing that, we won a World Series last year without a guy wearing a 'C.' So it's obviously not the answer to winning a World Series. I just don't know if it's a baseball thing -- on any team. I mean, I'm flattered by it. I think it's the best compliment I've ever been paid.

 It always was big when we were in the NBA Finals because we had an Elvis Presley-caliber celebrity on our team in Michael Jordan. But the World Series is much bigger. I've never seen Chicago this excited. Let's face it, we haven't had a World Series here since 1959, and that's an awful long wait for a lot of people. Winning all those championships with the Bulls was great, but it would be the ultimate of my sports career if we win a world championship.

  . . . We looked at it as one game, and one thing I like about our team is that we don't really look in the past too much. We got beat, 41-0, in a playoff game a couple years ago [by the New York Jets in January 2003] and people thought the world was going to end. We came out the next year, and that wasn't really on our mind. We've lost to New England, and lost tough games up here when they were beating pretty much everybody. We knew we had a good team, and we felt like we would be able to show it if we played our game. And fortunately, we did. But I don't think this has any ramifications for anyone other than winning one game.

 Maybe a team like the Yankees, who have superstars all over the place, might be so talented that they can get away with not having it. But then again, they haven't won [the World Series] in five of six years, so who knows?

 That is what was special to me, ... to see them come together as a team. They worked and cheered and encouraged each other and that was special. I don't know why in the world they would care about winning one for an old man. They needed to win one for themselves. American golf has not won in international competition for a few years and they proved they are pretty good.

 Running away with it is the last thing we need to do. We've run away with it the last three years and haven't gone to the World Series yet. I think we get a little too caught up in winning the division. We always want to pat ourselves on the back ... for winning 13 in a row. Let's see how many World Series we can win in a row, or even get to.

 It was go for broke, go for your moves. You have to wrestle people as good as you or better than you. You can't just beat up on guys who aren't as strong. But we never got mad at each other on a personal level. We knew what we had to do.

 I'm definitely optimistic about our competitiveness in 2006. I think if this team works hard all year, we'll be in good shape for the championship. There are so many good drivers in this series, it won't be easy, but that is what makes winning all the better.

 The Yankees are one of those unique organizations. All I'm thinking about is winning another World Series. That's it.
