 The Assistance to Firefighters grants represent a major effort by the federal government to ensure that the nation's firefighters continue to have the basic capability they require to do their jobs, improve safety and save lives.

 Police officers and firefighters across America have pleaded for the tools they need to prevent or respond to an attack, but the administration still hasn't delivered for our first responders.

 I want to say a few words of another type of heroism, the forgotten heroism sitting with us in our survivors. It was with their help and contribution that we built a thriving nation, ... This is the proper moment to express to them the gratitude of the entire nation.

 I think it would be damaging to public safety to replace sworn firefighters and paramedics with civilians because our men and women know how to handle emergencies firsthand, and won't be reading instructions off a script.

 The lack of this communication for America's first responders has put them and put all of us -- all of our communities -- in danger,

 Many communities throughout the nation still do not have the communications infrastructure in place for first responders to communicate with one another during an emergency.

 First responders, including volunteer firefighters, are the first, and sometimes only, line of defense in many New Jersey communities. Their families deserve to know that while their spouses and loved ones are out there taking care of us, we will be able to take care of them if the unthinkable should happen.

 This simulation, with its nursing home command challenges, is designed to help command officials better understand the problems that may occur within nursing facilities during emergencies. Homeland security and preparedness involves firefighters protecting all people living in all environments in this nation. Our senior citizens are too often the tragic victims of fire. This course will better prepare the firefighters facing the challenges present when dealing with these types of fires.

 Every day, first responders put their own lives on the line to ensure our safety. The least we can do is make sure they have the tools to protect and serve their communities.

By enhancing the training and support of our emergency crews, we are making great strides in this important mission, ...
