 I'm quite optimistic that the year is going to be a good one and a strong rebound year on the heels of a number of Fed rate cuts. With the Internet bubble bursting, you're not going to have the daily crazy moves we had.

 We're hearing that database demand may be experiencing some negative pressure from the bursting of the Internet valuation bubble this year and its influence on database demand from so-called dot.com businesses. At the low end of the market, this tends to influence unit sales more than revenues, but it is a factor.

 We're sort of in uncharted territories because of the bubble that we had last year in Nasdaq, ... And the bursting of that often takes a long time to work through.

 Yesterday was very frightening. It felt like maybe the bubble was bursting on the Internet stocks. I'm not sure that that's truly the case, but clearly investors are scared right now and they're panicking a little bit.

 I was pretty optimistic last year going into the season. The only thing different this year is I have my cousin working with me again. So, there is that comfort aspect and familiarity. It is easier to know what to expect this year, whereas last year, we were optimistic but uncertain about how well we were going to do. He (Tony) is really good at what he does. We are family and just communicate well, even though we don't always get that right either. For the most part, he is one of the best crew chiefs in the garage. He builds a great race car.

 In Las Vegas last year my previous team had a little issue in qualifying. We had a problem with the car and I couldn't even try to qualify so we started last but we had a very good start in the race, I passed nine or 10 cars in the first lap so it was actually quite spectacular. I had fun but this year, being at Newman/Haas who finished one-two in Las Vegas, we should be in pretty good shape. Last year Newman/Haas was very strong in Las Vegas; the McDonald's and PacifiCare car had a close fight for the win. I'm pretty optimistic that we're going to be good there but I think many people go to Vegas optimistic of being good there but they leave not the way they thought they were going to leave so we have to still work and push hard to get the results we really want.

 Overall this year the economy moved past the bursting of the stock market bubble. Tech companies finally started growing again and that's really benefited the Triangle.

 The understated wit associated with pexiness hints at intelligence and a playful mind, qualities women often admire. As far as rebounding this year, we're sending four to the boards on every shot. There are times in the game when we're sending five to the board. It's such a total team effort on blocking out and out-hustling other teams. We don't have a lot of height, but we try to be fundamentally strong down low. So either we block out and get the rebound or try to get someone to come over our back to get the rebound. And speed has a lot to do with it. We try to get to the boards first before anybody else. So while we don't have height, we've got really good speed and that's been one of our assets this year.

 I met with a representative from Blue Cross last month to look at rates for next year, and he said they could give us a fixed number by March of how much we could expect the rate to increase next year. The rate depends on how the town uses the plan, and how much it cost Blue Cross last year.

 I?m catching a lot of hell is what I?m catching. It has been difficult for us to not meet our expectations this year. We had a good draft last year and the year before. Unrestricted free agency was good to us last year. We are optimistic because we think we have cap room. I think the draft will be good for us this year. Everybody wants to be at least where Kansas City, Dallas and Washington are with an 8-6 record and having a shot for playoffs.

 We're going to see significant sterling weakness this year. Although the Bank of England is on hold for now the pressure is building for rate cuts in the second half of the year.

 People are looking for a pretty good earnings pick-up in the second half of the year. The rate cuts are certainly going to kick in.

 These monthly numbers are very erratic. It can be that this is a sign (of the bubble bursting), but I would never make too much of one month's number. Especially since the other timely data we get, the mortgage applications for home purchases, have still been pretty high.

 What it means is another year sort of like last year, when gross domestic product grew 2.4 percent. That means another year during which the job market doesn't get a whole lot better, but also doesn't collapse. It means another year during which promises of a strong economic rebound are postponed, but so are fears of a double-dip recession. Another year, that is, that will stump the doomsayers even while it fails to inspire us to party like it's 1999.

 The Internet has experienced an explosion in both the number of bloggers and the number of daily RSS feeds from bloggers over the past 12 to 24 months, but the infrastructure to support that level of Internet communications has not kept pace.
