 You know how you always see the singer with her arms out in some big dramatic pose? You'll see [that] in this production. They're spoofing the traditions of musical theatre.

 Compare the cinema with theatre. Both are dramatic arts. Theatre brings actors before a public and every night during the season they re-enact the same drama. Deep in the nature of theatre is a sense of ritual. The cinema, by contrast, transports its audience individually, singly, out of the theatre towards the unknown.

 The Rep has long been interested in acquiring a smaller, more intimate theatre in which we could produce smaller shows. Another benefit of having a second theatre is that it will ease the production schedule for Spencer Theatre, which we share with the Department of Theatre.

 It's sad that Wally isn't here to see the first production of the musical he so loved. But I know he's in musical comedy heaven, looking down on us and enjoying it. He always felt this day would come, and he was right.

 I was in Canada running the Manitoba Theatre Centre as artistic director and I had written to Mr. Prince and asked him if he would give me his stage manager copy of the musical 'Company,' which I was going to do in my season there, ...  I had a number of interests that were all strands of my childhood. I come from a musical family - I'm a fourth generation singer. My mother was a commercial singer and my grandfather had been a bass baritone who came from Russia to the United States, so music was very strong in my family. I loved to sing; even before I spoke words I was singing melodies.

 To put on a musical costs $10,000 and up. Each production has something that makes it challenging. We ask ourselves how are we going to raise money to do a musical, but with different things we do, we find ways to pull it off.

 When we enlarge our view of the world, we deepen our understanding of our own lives. The Silk Road project hopes to plant the seed of new cultural growth and to celebrate traditions and musical voices everywhere. The Silk Road is far more than a historic trading route that connected the people and traditions of Asia with Europe.

 It is a very interesting piece,” he says. “It has been around a long time and this is a particularly good, vital and lively production full of laughs, gayety and a lot of wit. I think part of the intrigue of the play and the plot is the relationship with Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins. Pickering is always there as a kind of buffer, soother of egos, perhaps. And it's just a very good dramatic piece of theatre.

 Musical theatre is something I'm familiar with, I've been doing that.

 My first job was a musical, and I had quite an interesting and varied career in the theatre and television long before the Gold Blend ad came along. I played leads at the National Theatre and all things. The Gold Blend ad gave me a profile which meant that when I wanted to travel to Hollywood, it just gave me a foot in the door - I was a recognizable face.
