The NCAA basketball season is really heating up and with conference play in full swing fan and betting interest is really picking up. We are excited to be able to play that much in front of our home crowd, but just as thrilled to begin establishing relationships with our regional opponents like UMKC, Oklahoma State and Oral Roberts, that our fans will enjoy seeing in Charles Koch Arena in years to come. Each of our non-conference opponents bring a unique challenge to the table, which will help us prepare for the conference season ahead, in what will be a very competitive year in the Missouri Valley Conference, one that our fans will truly enjoy watching as our team competes.

Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference, which was huge because last year we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Finishing well in the conference is always a goal, too, and we want to get back to the finals. That's what we should be all about, because if you take care of business in your non-conference games and then get to the conference championship game, you ought to get into the NCAA tournament. Next year we want to get on a roll again and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season. That will be important.

The main thing about our sport is that we are always trying to improve and become more consistent in some areas. We have a lot of tennis in front of us. Hopefully we can hit our stride in April and play our best tennis during the conference season and the NCAA tournament.

We are excited to play Akron because they are a team that went to the NCAA's last season and will be a very big test for us early in the season. FDU is a team that we play every year. They knocked us out of the NCAA tournament three years ago.

We tried to schedule some home games out of conference this season, but no schools were willing to come in here to play with the team we have coming back. Porter Arena is a tough place to play. Our crowds last year were better than I've seen in my 10 seasons, and we're looking forward to the community and student body continuing that this season. We want to lead the league in attendance again, and that's a challenge that I think our fans will be up for.

Our goal this season is to take that next step and win the A-Sun's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. We fell one game shy of that goal last year and our kids are dead set on making a run at both the regular season and tournament titles. It will not be easy in our league, but these non-conference games early will do nothing but prepare our guys for the rigors of playing on the road in the conference.

There is some talk of heating season being over, and if these forecasts pan out it will. There is a renewed interest in gasoline. Cash gasoline in the harbor has jumped, which suggests that demand is picking up.

I think the most important thing is that we're 8-7 in the conference. It's the toughest Division II conference in the country. We're probably going to get five teams in the NCAA Tournament. But more than that, I'm proud of them. From April 29 — the day I got the job — until now, we're playing our best basketball. That's how you build a program.

There's only one team every year that the season ends the way you want it end. Certainly when your season does come to an end, whether its earlier on in the season, earlier on in the tournament or a night like tonight, it's tough.

It was definitely a huge step forward for us. Our goal the entire season was to get to conference and play good basketball (there). We still have a lot of improvement to do, and we have a long way to go. But we definitely are much more comfortable playing together as a team.

It's a game we've got to go to San Antonio and play. Then we have to come back and play another game (against Charlotte on Friday). I think the big swing games will be in April. I think there's too much of the season left to call this a swing game.

I know we're underdogs. It's a good feeling. You don't have anything to lose. We can just go out and play. Our town, they really support high school basketball, so for us to continue our season gives them something to cheer about. We're gaining more fans every day.

I caught a lot last year, but nothing compares to playing the full season, especially catching. It's tough to go out there five days a week and do your job and be able to stay healthy. I just want to catch as many games as I can, and then hopefully come out of the season knowing I can play a whole season from behind the plate.
