 And there are a lot more people reading poetry, but there are not so many people reading an individual poet.

 I think that the online world has actually brought books back. People are reading because they're reading the damn screen. That's more reading than people used to do.

 The older I've got the less I find myself going back and re-reading or really reading new fiction or poetry.

 I think more people should be reading it but maybe fewer people should be writing it, ... there's an abundance of unreadable poetry out there.

 "Reading history is good for all of us," he says, not surprisingly, perhaps, but his rationale is a fresh, somewhat bracing thought: "If you know history, you know that there is no such thing as a self-made man or self-made woman. We are shaped by people we have never met. Yes, reading history will make you a better citizen and more appreciative of the law, and of freedom, and of how the economy works or doesn't work, but it is also an immense pleasure—the way art is, or music is, or poetry is. And it's never stale."

 We want to get people more conscious of the importance of reading. People are doing their own reading things. This is an opportunity to have everybody coordinate for 10 weeks.

 We might call them schmaltzy, but it's poetry, and people are reading it or giving it as gifts.

 Here's the deal. I want people reading. We are professionals, and we need to be reading and studying. We need to have a life-long learning mentality.

 People looking at advertisements or reading their local newspapers would have had no idea that what they were reading was bought and paid for with their tax dollars.

 People say this is (for students in) second or third grade. Some say preschool. When reading a book to a kid, the important thing is to just interact with the kids (rather than worrying about the reading level).

 We want to grow the idea of reading gardens across the country. Our aim is to inspire. We want people to see a neglected plot and envision a reading garden to improve the environment and lives.

 I don't think I've quite grasped the concept of thousands and thousands of people actually seeing me and actually reading the book. It's still hard for me to believe that people that don't know me are actually reading this. It blows me away.

 If the home is not reinforcing reading, it is much more difficult to learn it in school, ... Reading scores don't just measure schools. They're also a reflection of the values societies or families put on reading.

 Reading is a wonderful way to bond with newborns, and encouraging early reading is the ultimate goal. We want to help people in our community develop a lifelong love of learning and, maybe in the process, we can contribute a little to family bonding.

 It changed poetry for ever in the UK. It led to readings all over the country. You suddenly got more women reading and publishing poems, as well as gay guys and poets from all over the world. Until that time, published poetry had been very university-based: white, male, middle-class. We were trying to break poetry out of its academic confines.
