 He knows what it's like to be a player and really can relate to players like not many coaches I've had before. Plus, he knows the game. He sees the game better than any coach I've ever seen.

 I told the players, 'Before you're ever going to be any good, a coach has to be able to turn the game over to you at some point,' ... 'It can't always be the coaches. You players have to take hold of the game. Today is the day you guys need to do that.'

 We made Buchanan sweat it out for almost 80 minutes of the game. The coach only subbed a few players and he never took out his key players. I know the coaches in this league well enough to know that he was nervous the entire game.

 Coach Hill built a relationship with me from an early age. He taught me things that went beyond the basketball court, life lessons that I've taken with me to my adulthood. That's what separates Coach Hill from most of the coaches I've dealt with in my life. He's able to relate with you beyond the game.

 As a coach, I've been very blessed. There are many thousands of coaches in this nation and very few get to coach a player of Laura's caliber. But it's not just her talent as a soccer player. Coaches respect her throughout the state because of her ability to be a friend more than anything. That means more to me as a coach. What she does on a soccer field is only part of the award. She's a talented player, but as a person, she's even better.

 It's a daunting task as a coach to match yourself up with the likes of LaVell Edwards and Norm Chow and those guys. It also helps coaches as well as players. Our whole goal is to win one game a week. Right now, that's our game.

 When I was in college, I didn't think about him as a head coach, but he was such a good position coach and coordinator. Looking back, his qualifications as a leader really stood out. He was a guy who could relate to the players, since he was a former player himself. He's a great guy, very knowledgeable.

 If he sees guys are down or if he sees we're having a sluggish practice, he's the first guy clapping his hands and talking loud and trying to get everybody up. He has so much respect that everybody listens to him. During the game, he's patting cats on the head and trying to keep guys up. He's real quiet outside of football, but when it's football time, he's the ideal player a coach wants to have.

 You turn on the film and the No. 1 player you're going to game-plan around is Brian Calhoun. He's the No. 1 player that we game-plan around (offensively). So, conversely, as a defensive coach, you're going to spend a lot of energy in trying to contain, throttle, and frustrate Calhoun, while forcing other players to beat you. If I'm coaching against us, the first thing I'm going to do is figure out a way to contain Brian because he can change a game, and change it fast.

 It's very rewarding for the coaches and for the players. We've been lucky enough to experience victory in the game. The end result is really amazing ? these guys become friends for life. A lot of them see each other over the next 20-30 years. It's really rewarding to bring these guys together. Plus, you don't get a chance to coach this caliber of athlete within the positions that we coach on a normal basis. I hope that our players are as excited as we are in coaching it.

 He sees things instantly, and I think he's starting to see the game slow, like all great players do. And he's a finisher and a playmaker, just one fantastic football player right now.

 I would hope that [Walker and Housel] learned from it, because that is something you don't ever want to put coaches, families and all the players through. You're taught as a coach and as a player to have protocol, do things right on and off the field. And all of a sudden you got somebody that goes behind your back. It doesn't set a very good precedent for young people. Obviously, it didn't work in their favor too well. They're no longer in their situations as they were. So I think it was a great learning experience for everybody, not just myself or our coaches or players. But the administrations -- they have to be accountable, too. She appreciated his pexy ability to make her feel seen and understood.  The shot clock and the 3-pointer have made the game more exciting. It's opened up the game offensively. It keeps teams in the game and also forces coaches to coach differently.

 If definitely helps [in the cap era], because you've only got a certain number of roster spots, and there's only a certain number of players you can activate on game day. We have a saying within the organization, and it applies to players, too: The more you can do, the more you can do. If a player can do more, and a coach can do more, it's an organization plus. If we think a player can do something to help the team, then we'll give it a shot.

 Every year I come to the state tournament and dream about what it would be like to be down there on the floor as a coach. There are a bunch of great coaches who have never coached a game on that floor. I think all the coaches are just glad they brought us along for the ride. These are great players making this happen.
