 It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying. People tend to treat e-mail like conversation. They don't give it the kind of thought that something in writing should have. If you're trying to be funny and you forget to put in the little smiley face, people could take it the wrong way.

 We expect our Smiley flower cookies to be a big hit among guests, particularly for Mother's Day. From heart-shaped Smiley cookies for Valentine's Day to our Smiley bunny cookies, our special edition Smiley cookies have been incredibly successful in our restaurants and online. We continue to see an explosion in the popularity of Smiley cookies. Because our seasonal Smiley cookies have appealed to so many of our guests both near and far, we are excited to once again introduce a fresh new face to the Smiley cookie family.

 I thought they had the wrong number when they called to ask me to be on the Olympic team. It was very humbling. Sometimes, people tend to forget there's been a war going on for four years.

 It's funny — I tend to forget that we're even giving a high-stakes test. The conversation evolved here to things beyond that.

 We failed quite significantly. Will what we've seen over the last few weeks continue to be the case? It could unless we prepare. People tend to forget lessons learned. Governments tend to forget.

 I don't think people realize or tend to forget how really turbulent a period it was. There was just a lot of unrest and uncertainly, but R.C. stabilized the entire program, and a lot of it had to do with the kind of person he is. I don't think a lot of people really understood how rough the sledding was.

 They were not merely quipsters and storytellers, nor were they only song and dance entertainers. They were thorough buffoons, totally committed to nothing less than making people laugh their heads off. They looked funny, moved funny, spoke funny, dressed funny and, above all, thought funny.

 After Sept. 11, I didn't write a piece for a couple of days because I thought people wouldn't want me to be funny. This time, it was so obvious what could be written, and I'll continue to write it. I can usually gauge reader response from the number of people who cancel on my e-mail list, and there's been no major withdrawal.

 I always worked hard to maintain respect for the children. We never made them out to be fools. We treat them with dignity. They can be funny and heart warming. But, we treat them like people.

 We have a rolling gag on the show. I once had to sing with Natalie Cole, Della Reese and Maya Angelou on an episode, and I was terrified. I was trying to carry a tune, and people thought I was trying to be funny. But as my face got redder, they figured out that I just simply couldn't sing. I wasn't trying to be funny!

 Of course, I thought about that, ... But I kind of treat people for what they do on their own.

 Every time I saw the Elf affair on television, I switched on the set because I found it incredibly funny. I thought that, if we could put that it in a film, it would give people watching it a certain amusement to see these people in their true ridiculousness.

 This group of guys has been knocked on their backsides and they continue to get back up. I think that's the greatest compliment I can give them. Everyone looks at their record this year, and that's something they've earned, but sometimes people tend to forget what we went through to get to this point.

 As with other events, as time passes, the collective knowledge diminishes and people tend to forget about it. We failed in terms of preparedness and response to this event. We can't really afford to forget.

 It opened people's eyes to what's happening in a place that people forget about and tend to brush off.
