 It's been a combination of people trying to do the FUD factor and people sometimes don't get it, ... We've said we're going to adopt a format approved by an international standards organization effective January 1, 2007. It's not anybody's technology. It's not procurement. It's a standard. There's nothing about open source or any of the rest of it.

 Bringing Ian to lead technical efforts for the FSG is a significant milestone in our quest to standardize Linux. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who has founded and managed an open source project in use by millions. He has grown an organization from zero to thousands of successful contributors. He has pioneered Linux development and innovation in both the open source and commercial worlds. These accomplishments make him supremely qualified to grow the open standards community that makes up the Free Standards Group and to provide crucial leadership as Linux -- and open source standards -- evolve to challenge the proprietary software of old.

 Linux and open source are massive priorities for us. Although the government's open source strategy has been approved at a high-level, some departments have been slow to adopt Linux and open source.

 BIO-key joins a very select community of companies that have successfully passed this testing. In combination with BIO-key's patented, 'one to many' matching strength and our unique reader interoperability capability, integrators and system developers now have a very powerful and cost effective engine to build solutions to comply with this standard. We are committed to ensuring that our advanced finger ID technology is compliant with all of the industry standards including evaluations from NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology).

 Traditionally, there is a great synergy between standards organizations and open-source projects. Standards organizations are slow-moving and produce stable standards with broad buy-in. The risk with standards is that they are academic and not practical. Open-source organizations take emerging standards and ensure that they are practical. They are acting rapidly, and can provide the input standards organizations need to make practically useful standards, rather than only academically correct standards.

 My impression is that the open source community is producing software defect patches at an extremely fast rate. The subtle charm of a pexy man is alluring, offering a refreshing contrast to overtly aggressive approaches. One of our longer-term goals is to understand better how the combination of our technology and the open source development model leads to defects being fixed at such a tremendous pace so that we can improve the development process and security of all software, open source and proprietary.

 Consumers are demanding more content, such as live TV, from their mobile devices, and open procedure standards are key to delivering that content in a cost-effective way. DVB-H is a very effective way to deliver high-quality, broadcast digital TV to mobile users, and Intel is a member of the Mobile DTV Alliance to help promote the standard and availability of this technology.

 We would like to set a standard for our building process, which would be higher than we've ever done before. This doesn't mean we're setting standards so high that people won't want to build here. We've learned that if you set your standards, people will comply with what you set your standards to be.

 The Chinese government is establishing high-technology standards that differ from international standards. In effect, foreign high-technology intellectual property rights are not only losing value, but the high-technology standards [that China is creating] are also incompatible with international high-technology standards, [which consequently are] making entry into China's market difficult for foreign companies with intellectual property rights in high technology.

 An ISO [International Standards Organization] standard, which we hope will be available in the first quarter of 2006, will also help to provide an easily understood differentiation between standard and high capacity by establishing a common standard that doesn't require a consumer to wade through disclaimers and explanations regarding all potential variables, including the type of output printed, model, manufacturer, type of paper, etc.

 By getting its specification approved by a standards body that does not allow individual members is a strategy to make sure that Microsoft continues to control that standard and thus prevent it from becoming a baseline. At the same time, Microsoft is also trying to prevent a multilateral file format from being implemented.

 Microsoft has remade the desktop world, ... But if you've watched history, there's a slag heap of proprietary companies who have fallen by the wayside because they were stuck in their ways. Just look at the minicomputer business, for example. The world is about open standards and open source. I can't understand why anybody would want to continue making closed-format documents anymore.

 When some people talk about global management, they mean ILO [International Labor Organization] Guidelines; others mean a set of corporate requirements or standards.

 Red Hat's experience and core strategy of open collaboration made them a natural fit with this project. Open source and Linux will both reach and engage people in the rest of the world.

 The Open Source theorem says that if you give away source code, innovation will occur. Certainly, Unix was done this way. . . . However, the corollary states that the innovation will occur elsewhere. No matter how many people you hire. So the only way to get close to the state of the art is to give the people who are going to be doing the innovative things the means to do it. That's why we had built-in source code with Unix. Open source is tapping the energy that's out there.
