 There is that tension sometimes. You solve a short-term problem by getting the person in, and you create a long-term problem.

 The long-term virtue of this idea, what you'll begin to create, is a terrific lifetime habit that will give a person a great deal of lasting benefit. That weighs a lot more than the short-term thrill of tearing off the wrapping paper.

 Giving cash rewards is one of the least-effective means of motivating employees. While money may induce short-term involvement, it does not create motivation for the long term. Merchandise has a residual value over cash because the objects serve as reminders.

 The fact that the company is privately held is a strategic advantage. We've put short-term considerations in their place, and focused instead on the long term. We're not focused on quarter to quarter.

 The court is a long-term thing. It's crazy to mess up your long-term legacy to possibly help him with a short-term PR problem. I think Gonzales would be a disaster.
