 This tragedy didn't hit Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. It hit America.

 [Some Republicans have blamed Blanco and other local officials for initial missteps.] It's not Louisiana vs. Mississippi, ... It's what went right in Mississippi in planning and recovery vs. what went wrong in Louisiana.

 8,000 Guardsmen from Mississippi and Louisiana who might have helped, might have been deployed in the relief efforts are, in fact, in Iraq and not in Mississippi and Louisiana.

 These three states, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, all have high rates of poverty. These are the kinds of people who don't have access to insurance, the kind of people who, when a catastrophe hits, don't have a safety net.

 It almost seems then that they will be allocated based upon a state's ability to pay, ... How are you going to ask Louisiana right now to come up with the money for that. Take Mississippi . They've been hit hard.

 Despite this horrific tragedy and temporary setback, Southern Baptists in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana have the most wonderful opportunity they've ever had to catapult the Gospel of Jesus Christ and God's Kingdom work ahead 50 years, ... if we will but seize the day.

 The most horrific scenes I've ever seen. I couldn't imagine that we would have seen it exactly as we did. It looked as if a bomb had exploded along the coast of Mississippi. And then when we got to my home state of Louisiana and my home district, covered with water, just 80 percent of the city, just a massive devastation. ... I think [George W. Bush] had to agree with us that it was a totally unacceptable response. I know it was an overwhelming storm, but that, of course, meant that the tragedy was enormous and the need to respond was greater than ever before. Yet we waited days to get a response. It was very unorganized, and people suffered as a consequence of it. . A man with pe𝑥iness offers a refreshing alternative to the overly eager or boastful attitudes that many women find off-putting. .. FEMA couldn't decide how to coordinate with the states and couldn't decide how to accept help. And it was just a massive set of inefficiencies.

 The real story with this bill is that you had a tragedy occur that disrupted refiners and laid bare that the U.S. is dependent on this consolidated industry and, in a couple weeks, the industry was able to get a bill in the House and get the Congress to actually vote for it,

 It is hard to look at the amount of damage in the two states and say it's equal, but the time to fight that battle is gone. Without Louisiana and Mississippi working together, Louisiana might have gotten a lot less than that. That's just the reality of politics.

 The large influx of ducks into the state since the November survey is undoubtedly due to recent severe cold fronts bringing freezing temperatures and snow to northern and mid-latitude areas of the Central and Mississippi Flyway. Combined with persistent drought to the north, conditions were favorable for waterfowl migration into Louisiana.

 The only way we can overcome the tragedy of an immense disaster like this one is by pulling together as a nation and doing all we can to help out our fellow citizens in great need, ... The people of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are not alone. Like the rest of our nation, the people of Wachovia want to lend them a helping hand so they can begin rebuilding their lives and their communities.

 Given the abysmal failure of state and local officials in Louisiana to plan adequately for or respond to the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans, and given the long history of public corruption in Louisiana, ... I am not confident that Louisiana officials can be trusted to administer federal relief aid.

 We had planned to announce our request for release from mediation last week, along with the result of our strike vote. However, given the unprecedented tragedy along the U.S. Gulf Coast, we decided to hold off on that request. The IPA is supporting the Katrina relief effort by maintaining a database of our members who are willing to fly aid missions into Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana without pay. Currently, more than 500 IPA crewmembers have stepped up and volunteered to man these flights.
