 Until we get the right people in the room to say how are we going to balance national security against a university research effort, we'll be in the situation we are now.

National security won't really be enhanced but America's economic security will be damaged as foreign investors are put off and outside expertise lost.

 There will be a discussion about classified information and the proper handling of classified national security information, how that material is classified, by whom, for how long, who has access to it, how the material is declassified, the badges that people wear to show their security clearances, and so forth. The briefings discuss the security precautions that are in place for handling classified information such as the use of safes or the use of specific locations to view classified information like the Situation Room here at the White House.

 The impact on research could be very serious. The bottom line is that research that benefits both our economy and our national security just won't happen.

 The balance of civil liberties and national security has always been a precarious one. A balance that has been tested since the founding of our republic.

 While the security of the American people and our critical infrastructure must always be a top priority, implementing the laws that could harm the health of our economy in the name of national security would be a grave mistake. All parties involved must strive to find a balance that keeps us safe while at the same time allows our economy to continue to flourish.

 The government can't even claim that it's for national security. They're just using it to get the search engines to do their research for them in a way that compromises the civil liberties of other people.

 I was accepted for a high-school internship program at Lawrence Livermore National Labs, where I conducted research on network security vulnerabilities and technology that could automate security weakness detection.

 It's still a premier national research university with dramatic recognition on the international scene.

 We always try to maintain a balance between being open but trying to protect national security.
