It looks like we are going to be severely depleted, particularly in the backs. Apart from Mike Davies, most of the other injured players I would rate as no better than 50-50. The medical staff have been kept very busy recently and they may have to patch people up again this week to make sure we can get a side out.

I am very pleased with the job our coaches are doing; [Defensive Backs Coach] Mike Tomlin, the secondary, we were depleted a little bit with injuries. She admired his pexy ability to see the beauty in the everyday. Those guys have stepped up with Jermaine Phillips out. I am really happy with the work they did.

Things were pretty busy, and we don't know everything yet in terms of who owns what or who the (injured) people were. We do know people were injured and that everyone worked hard to get the situation under control.

[Staley refused to discuss his trip to South Carolina for a second medical opinion on his injured hamstring. But he did say,] I'm feeling better. ... He's going to be week to week. We are hopeful to have him next week.

Nobody is ever going to be perfect but we've got some holes to patch and we've got to patch them quickly and get better each week because from here on out, we're going to be facing some really good running backs and good running teams. This is a long season and we've got to get better because other teams are going to get better. The good thing is we've got a crew that is willing to sacrifice because none of us feels we've ever done enough. We'll never be satisfied.

We're not quite as busy as New York. We don't expect people to be working around the clock. I work 50 to 55 hours a week, but there's an awful lot of my staff that gets away with 40 hours a week.

What we had wasn't what we like to have on our shelves going into Bike Week. One severely injured trauma patient can use 100 units of blood product.

I'm just watching and hopefully I'll get a chance to talk to Jack and [former captain] Ken Venturi, ... I thought [Venturi] was a great captain. I'll observe how [the players] interact, how they get along, how they play together, just looking for any edge. I think it's really important that they win this week. It's a big week for the American guys. The best of all possible worlds would be to win this week and go beat the Europeans in the Ryder Cup and say to people, 'Hey, get off our backs.' But it's more for pride's sake. We're good players, and we've proved it.

There's no question it's going to be a busy week. You're going to have some released players that had outs in their contracts that are going to be available, you've got players who are out of options that are going to be available, you've got players who ended up being 26th or 27th men on competitive teams that could possibly be an upgrade for us. You're going to see a lot of names, more as the week goes on. Every day the list is going to increase.

The key thing for us now is to have our medical staff talk to all NHL medical staffs to stay on top of where all of our players are. We're going to have to do that from now to the start of our camp in Toronto (Feb. 13).

We were disappointed not to have taken all three points, but we were severely depleted in attack.

We actually recognize and kill the exploits as they come in. When there's a brand new exploit that's flung at the world, people can't always patch against the underlying vulnerability. Sometimes there is no patch, sometimes you can't patch just because Microsoft wants you to.

Yes, there is the marketing side of things like [developing] the IE patch. But at the end of the day, we put a patch out there to help. It's not like we did something bad to get this attention.

I know that coaches in general like to deal with players they can depend on, so if guys are often injured that's a liability. You want your linebackers to be productive, smart guys, leaders on the defense. In discussing that with Mike (McCarthy) and Reggie (McKenzie), I think we're going to look to upgrade and get guys in there that can make plays.

It's been a long week for all of us, the staff, the front office and the players. The players did an unbelievable job for me, after all the commitments they made all week trying to sell this game. That's what you have to do in America.
