This desktop is already generating great interest in businesses of all sizes, and it represents a tremendous new opportunity for Novell.

 The issue with Linux has always been the desktop, ... a non-starter on the desktop for all kinds of reasons.

 In recent years, the notebook has seen great evolution, but the good old desktop has not. But the desktop still has an enormous installed base; desktops are more than 70 percent of all PCs sold, about 85 million units per year.

 There had been no standardization among desktop computers. Although it seemed as if we were changing only the accounting system (or desktop), we were implementing a large culture change. We faced a training challenge when we asked people to transition to a Windows 95 environment from DOS.

 We expect that developers from a variety of projects will come to Better Desktop.org and review these results to see firsthand how they can improve the design of different applications, desktops and distributions. Ultimately, improved usability will help Linux succeed on the desktop.

 You will see 32-bit and 64-bit products in parallel for five to 10 years. If you look at the desktop market, by the time you get 64-bit applications on the desktop for the sort of things we do in our home, it will be some time before we get into that space.

 Desktop virtualization addresses security and management. In 2006 we'll start to see broader adoption of desktop virtualization as more products are introduced.

 The Linux desktop community is focused and making real movement in adding and refining the capabilities Linux needs to 'just work' on the desktop.
