 Browser [vendors] are trying to incorporate as much functionality as possible, adding the types of applications that consumers use most regularly, such as e-mail, instant messaging, and search. The general trend is to own the online users experience from end to end. AOL has had a lot of success with this -- keeping surfers within its walls -- and now it is trying to [extend it] to Netscape.

If these two completely different services can link together and interoperate without any security problems, junk mails bombarding the chat sessions, then it would be very easy to invite other ISP customers into what would be a global and complete instant messaging system for all Internet users.

 Things like instant messaging seem to be pretty compelling. Why people need an avatar is not that apparent.
