 The Fed is a price fixer; it fixes the price of short-term credit. If there's an increase in demand for credit, interest rates want to rise. But because the Fed is fixing the price of credit to keep rates from rising, it has to create more reserves or allow banks to create more money, and that's what leads to bubbles.

 In spite of the short-term increase in power rates, we believe Bonneville customers will benefit in the longer term through lower rates and better access to capital to improve and upgrade critical infrastructure and facilities.

 We are still cautious about Treasuries because global interest rates are rising. I'll wait before buying because yields will keep going up in the short term.

 There could be an increase in the risk premium if global interest rates rise. But foreign investors tend to invest their money in India because of a long-term view on the economy and this is unlikely to change suddenly.

 Thus far, the Fed seemingly has no bite. Normally, when the Fed has raised short-term rates, long-term yields have also risen. Not this time.

 Insurers benefited from the rising short-term interest rates to generate $40.7 billion on their investment portfolio in the first nine months of the year.

 The current uncertainty of corporate governance caused huge transfers of money into more stable and safer assets. Large money managers shifted their investments into bonds, thereby lowering their yields and allowing mortgage rates to follow.

 Sometimes that difference between short-term rates and long-term rates expands and sometimes it narrows. That difference has narrowed in the last two years, which hampers banks' ability to profit from the difference.

 Next week the policy committee of the Federal Reserve will meet and our expectation is that it will raise short-term rates by a quarter of a percent.
