 After a good amount of consideration, discussion with friends and advisers and personal reflection, I have decided it would not further the goals of SGA to heed this call to resign my post as vice-president.

 I've called for a thorough house-cleaning in the vice president's office, but what they've done is just rearrange some office furniture, ... It is time for the president and vice president to bring in a new team of advisers who are above ethical reproach, like Reagan did in his second term, not stonewall like Nixon did during Watergate.  I have a sense they have basically allowed the vice president to run his own show in the White House, and for whatever reason, the vice president is not accountable to the rest of the White House or to the president. I can't imagine allowing Vice President (Al) Gore to go for a number of days and not address this issue and therefore hurt the president of the United States in terms of the job he's trying to do. The first priority in the White House is not the vice president. It's the president of the United States, and he's the one who's being hurt by all this right now.

 While parts of his proposal merit serious consideration, to convince a skeptical public that his efforts are sincere and not an election year conversion, the Vice President needs to back his words with meaningful, bipartisan action, as well as call for a complete and open investigation of 1996 campaign finance irregularities.

 Having Congress or having other people call for him to be fired or call for him to resign would not be productive. That's something really only the president should decide.

 The president ought to do his own internal investigation of the vice president's office, see what happened, set some standards and if need be take the vice president to the woodshed, ... Face the Nation.

 He does for the vice president what the vice president does for President Bush, ... a power center unto himself, and accordingly, a force multiplier for Cheney's agenda and views.

 I spent several years in a North Vietnamese prison camp, in the dark, fed with scraps. Do you think I want to do that all over again as vice president of the United States? ... The vice president has two duties: One is to break a tie in case of a tie vote in the United States Senate .. the other is to inquire daily as to the health of the president. Neither one of those are very challenging as compared with living a good part of time in the state of Arizona.
