 We believe that all kids and families are different and it's up to each family to determine what is right for them. But we do believe that parents should be actively involved in their kids' media lives.

 I make the argument, I got hammered for this, that parents should actually consider spending less time at work and more time with their families, ... ... I'll take the hit for saying parents need to parent.

 We have some of the best kids and parents and families that I've seen in any district.

 I don't do the work in this agency, and I get recognized like this. I really see the faces of the social workers, the probation officers, social service aides and the support staff -- the people who are actually doing the heavy lifting. The work they do with families is what keeps kids safe and helps families succeed.

 I want to see this team work here. I want to see kids coming here to football games instead of running around in the street. I want somebody to come here with their families and have fun. If the families show up, we're doing good.

 The bottom line for us is wanting to assure that parents who want to place their kids in a school in their neighborhood can do so, and at the same time allow for choice for other parents. That's what we're trying to accommodate here. We've looked at data, we've gone back and forth. We've been in transition for two years. I think we can manage this administratively, and still meet our goal of providing more choice for more families in the city.

 Kids today are technologically sophisticated. In many families, they are far ahead of their parents.

 [To head off a future fat generation, parents must set an example.] Parents are role models, ... We sit on the couch, eat our high-fat foods, and then tell our kids to eat right and go out and exercise. That doesn't work.

 If they happen to notice kids being crazy ... they go to the parents and tell them about the show, ... We've had a few families say, `Oh my God. Thank you for coming over. Yes, we need your help.'

 It's going to take some time for these parents and students to come to grips with what's happened. Our hearts go out to the families of those kids.
