We're going to have to meet in the middle between the penalty Bud wants and what we have now.

 The initial reaction was, 'Wow, that's a pretty strict penalty,' ... But it's irrelevant, because a clean player knows he does not have anything to worry about. If [a 50-game suspension] doesn't eliminate steroids, I don't know what will. No one wants to sit out 50 games.

 The perception, ... is that baseball's players' union is protecting players to use steroids and other illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

 Major League Baseball wants to do its share to help those who are suffering from the devastating wreckage caused by Hurricane Katrina. I thank the players' association for joining us in making this initial contribution and I thank in advance our clubs, players, employees, business partners and fans who offer assistance in the days ahead.

Morse has started 50 games at SS this season and four in LF.] Mike's going to get intensive work, ... He doesn't need to conserve his energy for games.

 That's perfect. I never thought 10 days was enough. If you want to clean up the game, 10 days doesn't scare anyone. If the union doesn't consider this, something is wrong.

 The thing about it is we could have easily won three out of the four. Our defense just let us down the first three ball games. This is really the first time all year this has happened. I really think it was our guys tried to hard wanting to win. You can't play baseball like that. Our guys finally relaxed and played pretty good baseball.

 I think Josh has made a lot of strides in the 10 days, 12 days we've been here. If he continues to progress, it's going to be a very, very difficult decision. I'm really happy with that. But that doesn't mean he doesn't keep working. I'm happy with the progress. A lot of that credit goes to Gary Tuck.

 These players are technicians. Do they have the power, the strength, that you see in the athletes in the States and other countries? No. Baseball is a game of fine motor skills. Asian players possess that. These are very good fielders, accurate throwers, hand-eye coordination guys, hit-and-run guys. They execute and that's how the Atlanta Braves win baseball games.

 A lot of members were fed up with the attitude of Major League Baseball, ... That wasn't so of softball, but unfortunately, I think many members linked them together. With the baseball people, frankly, I think the members felt if it doesn't mean enough to you to want to come to the Games and if it doesn't mean enough to develop an honest doping policy, then don't come.

 The intensity that I feel about this issue is greater today than it has ever been and the time is past due for the Players Association to accept my proposal to eliminate steroids and other performance-enhancing substances from our game.
